Ok, for starters I have been a computer technician for the last decade. I've been helping a family member build his first gaming PC, and today I was told by an Asus rep that his card (Asus R9 280 dcu2) was not compatible with his mobo (Asus M5A97 LE r2.0) because the x16 Pcie slot was 2.0 and the GPU requires 3.0. Are Pcie 3.0 gpu's not backward compatible?

Yes they will work together. The HD7950 is not even close to saturating the speed of PCIe 2.0.

My gtx 660 is also 3.0 and it worked fine. Asus however said that the Gpu isn't backwards compatible

I've also seen up to 290x working on this board. The Asus 9th 280 won't even let the board post when installed
