PC freezes in games since installing SSD

So I built my system a bit over a year ago. Has been fine until i installed win 8.1 onto my new ssd (250g Samsung 840 evo).

I have installed battlefield 4 and watchdogs (both on ssd). but after about 2 - 5 minutes of gaming the game freezes (either game). it does that audio repeating thing for a few seconds then becomes completely unresponsive (screen stays frozen in game). then i have to hold power button to power off system.

A few things to note:

My mobo (asrock n68 vs3 fx) is terrible, it does not support AHCI or have SATAIII connections. so im running it in IDE mode i dont minds the speed still a lot better than my hdd.

I have 430 watt psu 80+ bronze. I know i cheaped out on this. but it has been fine the past year even slightly overclocked my video card (before ssd) and it was fine. i have also under clocked it since this freezing problem but still no luck.

The install was a clean install not a clone

I have installed the latest nvidea driver.

My system:
cpu: amd fx6300 @ 3.5 ghz (stock cooler)
video: msi gtx 660 ti (underclocked)
mobo: asrock n68 vs3 fx
ram: 2 x 4g (@1033mhz)
psu: 430w 80+bronze
ssd: 250g samsung 840 evo
HDD: WD green 1TB

I think SSD's are designed to work in AHCI mode.. So it could very likely be the fact your trying to use it in IDE mode. Im no expert on this, but i do have an SSD myself and use AHCI mode = no problems. Does it ever freeze while doing other things? perhaps you could try an SSD test programme (CrystalDiskMark) or something similar, as that tests the SSD and if theres a problem due to the IDE it will either crash on the test, or show very poor results

1) Do you update the BIOS to the 1.80 version yet? from the asrock's description: it will improve Windows 8 compatibility. http://www.asrock.com/mb/NVIDIA/N68-VS3%20FX/?cat=Download&os=BIOS I think it is the win8 compatible problem, because you said the PC run fine until you installed the win8.1 and I don't see any drivers for your MB too, if you still have the problem, it is the time to upgrade the MB.

2) Also you can use the raid mode for your SSD, I had the other NVIDIA chipset MB before, if you use the raid mode that will be better than IDE mode. You can use the single SSD under the raid mode, you don't have to use the two drive. I have tried crystaldiskmark here are results:
seq; read 245 mb/s write 233 mb/s
512k; read 217 mb/s write 223 mb/s
4k; read 25 mb/s write 59 mb/s
4k qd32; read 36 mb/s write 114 mb/s

i dont mind if its a little slow was expecting it from sataII and IDE. but how bad are these results
because my pc feels a lot faster than the HDD

Yes the bios are 1.80
Yes windows 8.1 ran fine on the hdd until i installed it to the ssd
im currently trying to change to RAID mode but having trouble. not sure which one (eg. raid1 or raid0 ect..)
or is it completely different to that?

more info;
-does not freeze/crash normally only in games
-can run unigine valley without freezing/crashing.
-can run other not so intensive steam games without crash.
-clean installed nvidia drivers (should i try a different one?)
-does not crash in passmark. results seem good
-re installed BF4 and still crashing

What brand PSU do you have? From your more info, it looks like the problem is PSU, because you said only 1) does not freeze/crash normally only in games, 2) can run other not so intensive steam games without crash. 3) re installed BF4 and still crashing. 4) run benchmark software does not crash. That means when you need more power for the PC it did crash.

it is an Antec 430 watt 80+ bronze. supposed to be good. you think it could be failing after 1 year? it doent make sense that unigine valley does not crash it i would imagine it would be a very power hungry program. is there any way to test a power supply?

New developments: IT guy at work showed me event viewer. this is the main error occuring on a crash/freeze.

Sounds like your motherboard because of the northbridge and bus/interconnect error.

Also unigine valley is their easiest benchmark/stress. Meaning it wont stress your pc that much.

I believe I replied before saying your motherboard is at fault (just read your OP). If it doesn't support ACHI then your SSD is doomed. Ssd only uses ACHI (by default). Get a better motherboard

Yes, it is your MB, sorry I miss one piece of the info, the MB, your MB has only 3 VRMs, they look like those (small square share) are in the left hand side of the cpu socket in the picture, http://key.ru/images/cms/imgwatermark/704a1033733cb3448ad1433da3c9c72f773069ce/510225_1.jpg

And the error "AMD Northbridge" is caused by the voltage, because n68 vs3 fx has only 3 of them and the cpu does not get proper voltages from those VRMs, if you increase the voltage then the VRMs will be overheat too, and Northbridge will control RAM, CPU, also the rest of the components (HDD, GPU etc). I see this error in some of the FX8 series PC build, which use the lower VRMs count MB like Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3.

You need get the new MB, if you don't plan to upgrade cpu to fx8 series in the future, you can only get the one like:
Asus M5A78L-M/USB3, Gigabyte GA-78LMT-USB3, ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0
If you want to upgrade to fx8 in the future, and you are better to get one like;
Gigabyte GA-970A-UD3P, Asus M5A97 R2.0

Ok. As for the results for your SSD test, they are good.. I have a Kingston ssd, which turns out they cheated customers by swapping to slower NAND chips after initial release and good results. My test showed 170 read and average 40-50mb write.. I'm still very impressed with it but its not good for SSD specs. Yours is bang on the mark. So that tells me somehow your motherboard is dealing with simple things quite well, but during gaming its prob over loading the mobo... I don't know what else it could be but id suggest at least a new motherboard just for the sake of the needed upgrade to get AHCI and sata3. Hopefully that solves the problem

i read a few things that it should handle the fx6300 well cause its 95w tdp. its aud$64 and Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 is aud$75
and i was hoping to keep this build for another 2 years then build a new high end system.

ASRock 980DE3-U3S3 will be fine, I know the parts in your country are ( or maybe ) very expensive, which compared to USA.
