The rest of my system is

Amd 8350
Evo SSD HD
16gb ram
500 Gig HD sata
DVD rom drive.

I run a 280x at the moment which runs perfectly but based on what i have read the 290 uses a extra 50 watts....but not sure if i would be pushing it with the 290.

TYI

Hmm, that is questionable. Are you overclocking the 8350?

I wouldn't risk it. Sell your PSU and replace it with XFX 750W

You could run R9 290 in general but your PSU would die in short time. It would be using around 80% of itself

I would say no. Just the basic build comes to 493W without doing anything. And not including case fans and peripherals.

You should upgrade to a 700-850W supply to keep things around %80 capacity.

You also have the option to keep the same PSU and wait for the NVIDIA 900 series GPUs to be released. Last I heard, the GTX 980 will draw only 170w max.

Okay cool , thank you , i shall perhaps reconsider, i could of course sell my 280x and my psu , would hopefully = 290 + xfx 750 PSU .....but hoping to buy the r9 290 at around £140...

Would my XFX550 be suitable for doing a test of the 290 on my system , i could put the cpu back to its original speed , unplug Sata HD and Sata DVD rom drive to make sure it works in general....say run it for couple of hour , do a couple of bench mark tests etc

Thank you for the advice...

Cheers Joseph for that advice , but what is the expected pricing on those cards ? as my budget is £150.00 for Graphics card.

Yes you could do that, but if you could sell your PSU to someone and buy 750W would be better and you wouldn't have to worry will you have enough W

True proofy , but i would buy the 750w subject to buying the 290 firstly , then seeking out a 750 watt PSU i seen a CoolerMaster G750M 750W Power Supply bronze PSU for £66.00 , are those any good ?

Here is PSU tier list from tier1 being the best quality PSU you can buy.

Try to buy tier2 PSU

I would recommend XFX 750W pro series for £70 (it is tier 2 A class)

Just spotted the same psu with free dellivery for £61.00 at cclcomputers , i have used them lots in the past , so if i buy the 290 , i shall grab a psu from there i guess.

Thank you for all you help.
