Alternate GPU won't respond

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire TC-603. It came fitted with a Geforce GT640.

For no apparent reason the bog standard PSU went bang so when I replaced it I got a nice 600Wt model in the hope I could upgrade the GPU.

Have been trying to fit a Geforce GTX 550 TI (which I know works ok) but the Aspire won't recognise it.

Any ideas?

I think I understand what you're asking... I ran a (required) 6 pin from the PSU to the GPU, nothing the other way around. The computer starts but the GPU does not. As I say, I do know for a fact that the GPU is fine.

One thing I have noted is the PC is PCIe3 and the card was designed for PCIe2. But from my research that should not matter.

I am not 100% sure how I would check or disable such an option :??:
