Hello everyone,

I have recently come across a serious problem with my Windows 8.1 installation. For some reason my computer froze up, because of this I was forced to do a hard reset. Every since then I cannot boot into my SSD that win 8.1 pro is installed on. I have tried using the recovery disk but I just keep getting errors such as, "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again - Refresh your pc", "Unable to reset your pc. A required drive partition is missing - Reset your pc.", System restore could not find the offline boot volume. Please ensure it is currently accessible - System restore.", "Startup Repair couldn't repair your pc - Startup repair". I have tried using bootrec /fixmbr /fixboot /rebuildbld to no avail. I have tried re-installing windows on the SSD but it's not being recognized because it's locked. Any advice?

Looks like your install is borked, I would the manufacturers own tool to wipe the SSD or a Linux liveCD to delete existing partitions and reinstall.

Try the Hiren's Boot CD (Live CD)... use it to see the hard drive partitions and contained OS and files for recovery, if that's possible it would be likely that only the OS has suffered damage. You can also run a Disk Check with "CHKDSK C: /R" typed on a Command Prompt Window, and next try booting your Windows 8.1 installation.

I have tried doing that. The recovery disk isn't even recognizing that my SSD is installed.

It could even be a fault with your SSD then. Whats the make, model, and date of purchase of your SSD ?

What option do I tick to see the SSD? I have burnt it to a disk and booted up from it but i'm unsure of all the options.

Open the Windows Explorer file manager and you should see the SSD name and drives.. you can also open the Disk Management and it should also be there... Both these options should allow viewing the SSD if it is still accessible by normal means, and is not hidden due to possible damange. If it's hidden, HBCD includes some tools that you can use to find the SSD and possibly repair it if it repairable.

You could also use another computer to try the SSD via USB or internal to see if it can be accessed

Look at the discussion here on the subject...
http://www.neowin.net/forum/topic/1195063-ssd-not-detec...

SSDs seem to be particularly vulnerable to improper shutdowns, but apparently all it takes is disconnecting the computer and waiting for things to reset.. you could also try ressetting the BIOS with AC off, battery off for 5 to 10 minutes and pressing the Power button for 1 minutes during that period. Another possible solution propposed in the linked discussion and which I have suggested that worked is removing/disconnecting the hard drive, and trying the SSD alone in the computer.

The SSD became visible after the 10 min down time. However, when I try to format it in Hiren's I recieve this error "Unfortunately, the selected drive's security state is set to frozen and the SECURITY_ERASE command cannot be performed."

Oh I have the perfect solution for that. .....

Please watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=udxNL6sCuDQ Sean explains what to do when it is frozen in the video. I know this is for secure erase and to DELETE all data, but it has the steps for 'unfreezing' as well.

Update: I purchased a SSD enclosure and attached it to my laptop via usb. It recognized the SSD but says the File System type is "RAW". I think it's dead..

RAW can be an unformatted partition or a corrupted file system... you can recover files from RAW partitions by different means some require paid software some comments say Recuva from www.piriform.com can recover data, and other comments say the only option is to format and lose files. Start with Recuva and hope it helps. I will keep searching for options.

EDIT:
Other comments suggest the RAW partitions are caused by corrupted partition tables, which can be repaired with partition recovery software... Minitool Partition Wizard includes a Partition Recovery. If Recuva doesn't recover your files or has trouble doing it, try Minitool Partition Wizard and run the Partition Recovery just as the program starts up.

I recently successfully recovered all data from a RAW external 1TB WD hard drive. I used a program called Stellar Phoenix. Awesome software but not the most intuitive like recuva. http://www.stellarinfo.com/

I used the paid pro version....but they do have a free one too. (not sure if it can do the same job)
