So I just replaced my old VGA, installed the drivers and all of that amd software. To test it I decided to run Borderlands 2 on max settings, 1020p. It was running well for around 10 minutes, then suddenly the system rebooted and I got the message "Asus anti-surge was triggered to protect system from unstable power supply".
The system specifications are as follows:

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3.16GHz
Motherboard: ASUS P5G41C-M LX
VGA: Sapphire Dual-X R9 280X 3GB GDDR5 OC
Memory: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB 1600MHz RAM
HDD: Seagate 2TB 7200RPM
PSU: Corsair VX550W

It's important to mention the VGA requires 2 8pin connectors. My PSU has only one 6+2pin connector (and another 6 pin connector), so I had to connect the other 8pin using a molex to 8pin adapter that came with the VGA. I suspect using this connection might not supply the VGA the wattage it needs? From what I read online this PSU should be enough for the system though... Voltage levels are adequate, according to HWiNFO program. I think I should also mention that I had 2 fried HDDs in this system last week, however I'm almost certain it was caused by a wrong connection I did between them. I managed to fix one and it's running fine now, with a clean install of Windows 7.
Could this VGA be faulty? Could the PSU be faulty? Or it simply cannot supply the VGA enough power?

It's never a great idea to use a molex with the better cards.

I would upgrade.

I'm not sure if it matters, but I'm using 2 separate molex rails to the 8 pin connection. Is it still bad? By the way, would a 6 pin to 8 pin connector be more appropriate?

It's best to have a power supply that has both of the connections without adapters.

I just did some more tests. On a less GPU intensive game (Counter Strike GO) I had no problems. Running Borderlands 2 again, the system shut down after a couple minutes.

I needed to know if this GPU is working correctly at least, since I bought it recently. I guess it's safe to assume the PSU is not supplying enough power? (and there's nothing wrong with the GPU)

A decent card like you have should be run without using the adapter.

But do you think the system shut down because of this connection with an adapter?
