I've read through hundreds of other black screen threads but i still cant get mine resolved.

It's a 5-yr old Sony Vaio laptop running win 7 home premium 64. I tried to install an updated driver for the sound card because it stopped working. After the driver update I restarted and got the meesage to either run startup repair or run windows normally. Neither of these options work they both take you to the black screen and cursor. I have also tried all of the options in the advanced menu(safe mode, lkgc etc) and get the same result.

I also have tried ctrl-alt-del while in the black screen. It does nothing. I did a hdd test and mem test, both passed. I booted ubuntu off a live cd with no issues. I was able to browse the hdd and see all the windows files.

I also tried running a repair installation from the win 7 dvd but it also takes you to the black screen with cursor.

I really don't want to do a wipe and re-install. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks

so even startup repair from cd didn't work
now we are left with two things
try system resore using the cd
and if it doesnt help open the command prompt in the installtion cd and type these commands

Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot
Bootrec.exe /RebuildBcd
Press ENTER after each command
then restart your s/m(remove the cd b4 that.
google up for more codes if the above codes doesnt solve the issue.
