I've always had Apple products, but I'm less than enchanted by the non-upgradable-ness of them these days. :sarcastic:
So, I'm planning to go PC, and I'm seriously thinking about building my own. I know I have the hand-skills, but parts-wise, I could use a bit of advice and opinion :)
~~~~~~~~~
Approximate Purchase Date: by the end of October-ish
Budget Range: I'm willing to spend about the same as a new mac, or a bit more since it should end up as future upgradable, not just a 'vertical laptop'
System Usage from Most to Least Important: Online gaming, desktop publishing and light graphic design, general high-graphics gaming, music streaming, home finance, and the basics (email, webmail, net surfing, Open Office, etc.)
Are you buying a monitor: Yes, preferably 24" up to 27" (any larger won't fit into the space I have to work in)
Preferred Website(s) for Parts: No particular one, I'm willing to shop around if there're better prices to be had by not dealing with just one vendor. I'd prefer to not buy just one thing from each, though, to minimize shipping costs, wherever possible
Location: a bit north of Boston MA USA I can get into Boston if I absolutely need to, but I'd prefer to shop the nothern & eastern suburbs
Overclocking: Maybe
SLI or Crossfire: Maybe, probably not now. Might like the option to later, though.
Per suggestions, I've made a few changes and updated the BoM.
Sound Card: I actually do have decent speakers :) - I'm currently running the audio output of my imac through my 4 speaker stereo system
Memory: Ripjaws X or Ares ? I'm a bit concerned about clearances, and Ares is 1/4 inch shorter, but Ripjaws has better latency.
Thanks
For ram, try - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231550
You should get a better cooler for an i7 eg noctua, H80
Get a better quality power supply eg Seasonic M12II 620 $75 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151095 - save $50
Your motherboard comes with a wired internet adapter - save $30
Don't buy the case fans till you've tried the ones that come with the case - save $30 or get a better case
You also won't need the sound card. The motherboard will have just as good sound. save $90
In fact, you could drop to the ASRock Z97 Extreme 4 or Asus Z97-A per http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/mainstream-gaming-z97-motherboard,3824.html and save another $30
If you're going to get a 27on...
It all works
But
The RAM CAS is 10 . Lower numbers here are better . Im sure better quality RAM is available .
The motherboards network controller will be as good as the add in card so you may as well use that instead .
The sound card I would put in to the same catagory ... unless you have very good speakers . $500 +
If you're going to get a 27on monitor, get a 1440p eg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236294 $490 - spend another $200
Better still, just get a 24 in 1080p eg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236153 $180 - save $100
