I was thinking of getting a headset for gaming, im a medium gamer, fpss mainly. I was thinking of getting either a Razer Kraken Chroma (When it comes out), or the Logitech G430. Both of then have some annoying problems,(Ive tried both of them, Razer Kraken 7.1). For example the kraken has a buzzing sound , and the g430 has a creaking noise. And now im wondering if i should maybe save some money and get a stereo headset, or is there a better headset, what do you guys think?

You can choose whichever one suits your budget.

I'm still using the PlayStation headset when I transitioned to PC gaming and it works perfectly fine.

many so called surround sound gaming headsets are actually just regular stereo headphones running virtual surround technology.

for example the chroma is virtual 7.1 and only has one 40mm driver in each ear. the g430 is the same way. you can achieve the same sort of effect using better headphones by going with a nice pair of stereo headphones instead... you would just need a mic. or, you could do the same thing with stereo headsets with 3.5mm analog plugs.

So I can use a good pair of headphones and get surround sound? Or is there a virtual surround software I can get?

to get virtual surround on stereo headphones the easiest way is to have a soundard which supports virtual surround. there is software available (razer has it free) but its not going to be as bug-free and may not be as good as the ones included on soundcards.

the xonar dg for $27 for example comes with dolby headphone which is virtual surround in case your current soundcard or onboard doesnt support it. the $60 creative z is a better choice though with sbx.

Sorry, i forgot to say im using a laptop, im not sure if those are compatible with laptops. How about external sound cards? I am using a Sony VGN-FW235D, and it has a Dolby Sound Room sound card.

Just buy some medium grade gamer headsets, most audio devices have headphone virtualization option that you can enable for the front panel audio output.

I just found out that my Dolby sound card supports 5.1 surround, it just wasnt enabled. So im good with that, but just to know, what is the best surround sound gaming headset in the $100 CAD range or less in your opinion?
