My Computer is usually able to handle majority of the games i throw at it but since I started playing Diablo 3 again the FPS has been terrible. When in town and walking around with a party i stay at a solid 45-60fps but as soon as we initiate a fight my fps plummets to 10-15 fps. I've tried adjusting all the in game setting and even tried going to 800x600 resolution but even then the fps still drops to 10-15. I really don't have any idea what the problem is other than alot of my computers components really don't work well together.
System Specs:
CPU: AMD FX 8120
Ram: 8gb
GFX: GeForce GTX 670
MOBO: ASRock N68-VS3 FX

Not sure if my GFX card is bottle necking my CPU or if my MOBO is bad or what. Would Appreciate some help. Thanks

The core speed for that cpu should be at 3.1 but, your ram is very slow. 535.7 x2 ( cause it's DDR ) = 1074 which is low. You need to change your ram settings to 800MHz assuming you have 1600MHz ram like most modern pc's do, if you only have 1066MHz ram I would consider stepping up to 8 GB of 1600MHz. You do it in the bios and sometimes its an option like " preference 1 " or just set it manually. Also check your CPU-Z and make sure that under memory it says " DUAL " if you have 2 4GB sticks.

If your using a really old HDD you may want to look into something newer that runs at 7200rpms.

It goes something like this. The information ( Game ) comes from the HDD to the ram and the gpu. Faster is better.. Then the ram stores pieces of the...

It's not my internet. I always have a solid 60 ping when in games. The lag happens when everyone starts spamming their abilities and when the screen is flooded with monsters.

Your refresh rate could be off. Try changing your tv's settings.

http://www.displaylag.com/what-is-input-lag-the-breakdown/

A lot of people think they can get the newest gpu slap it in and get the best picture quality possible off their 5 yr old tv or monitor. Not saying you're one of those people but it is something major to consider when playing a graphic intensive game and you want high fps during a lot of action.

If you are using team speak or the like and notice no breaks in comunication when this " lag " happens, I would rule out connection an most every hardware issue.

My monitor could always be a possibility. I've tried changing some on its settings but really no change at all. i checked out the article and noticed that my monitor does not even have a gaming mode. And popatim, when i play alone or with one other person there is hardly any problems and stay at a solid 50-60 FPS in any situation.

From what I read there is a quick fix that works for a lot of people though not all.

"You need to edit your diablo 3 config file. The location is for windows 7:
located in /Users/My Documents/Diablo III
Now there is alot of options, and i've tested them but do NOT change PreferencesVersion because you WILL CRASH.

With that being said here is the quick optimization: Scroll down thru your config file and find these 3 lines and make changes if necessary.

DisableTrilinearFiltering “1”

MaxForegroundFPS “60”

HardwareClass "2"
Now this one is "iffy" and you will have to choose what works best for your system. Personally I think it has to do with what version/directx its going to run. For instance 0 will make the game crash out and not load with a direct x number. I keep mine at 2. 1 seemed to speed it up, and 0 wont load. "

The HardwareClass is the to be put in a simple way the actual strain on the gpu. It ranges from 1-6, 1 being of low picture quality and minimal stain on the gpu and 6 being full bore balz to the walz.

The reason you want to fix your fps at 60 or so is because even though your game may run at 100 fps most of the time then it drops to 70 at points you will notice this big time and even though 70 fps is fine it just looks slower than you have been getting used to. I can also cause warping and spell casting delay.

Ok so i changed the settings in the Diablo III folder but i'm still getting the same exact lag I was getting at max settings. Alone i have no lag but when there is screen clutter in a group of 4 i go to 15 fps. I have 0 idea why this is happening. I also hooked up my PC to another monitor and it was still just as laggy so i doubt its the monitor. I'm convinced that its either my MOBO or my CPU. I've read up on my CPU and it does not appear to be the best.

That cpu is more than enough for D3. What do your temps look like? The FX8k series tend to run HOT ans need aftermarket cooling. Many go with liquid cooling cause they get that hot. They also have a thermal throttle setting that will lower the fps when it gets running heavy.

You may even have one of those boards that have a thermal throttle for the socket it is usually much lower temp setting than the cpu throttle if your does have one. If you look around her there are many threads on how to shut these options off in your bios, but be careful if you do not have EXCELLENT air flow and cpu cooler or a liquid cooling system.

What PSU do you have? The FX8k cpu uses up to 230w even though it says 125w. The power requirements for the gtx 650 are 500w it does not use all of that but it does need at least a GOOD 500w psu to run this setup without problems under load. If you have a cheaper 500w psu it could be your problem.

Does this same effect happen on any other graphic intense games under a heavy load?

Well my CPU is running around 44°C and i have a Corsair liquid CPU cooler. I Will check out thermal throttle but I'm not sure if i have enough cooling to shut that off. Any idea what the temperature of a CPU has to be in order for FPS problems to start taking place?

Ok so I disabled throttling in my BIOS and it' did not change a thing. And using CPU-Z i was not able to locate my CPU frequency but the core speed is 3.117 during the lag. (not sure if that means anything) and my RAM Frequency is 535.7 when i drop down to 8 FPS.

It goes something like this. The information ( Game ) comes from the HDD to the ram and the gpu. Faster is better.. Then the ram stores pieces of the game that wil be used again so it can be shown much faster and relieve some strain on the gpu which is rendering everything. Some people will say ram doesn't effect fps much but, if it is too slow with the memory pieces it has it can cause slowing of the whole process. Some better gpu's have lots of ram built in to render even faster and that's why there is a big difference in price from the same gpu with 2GB and 4GB.

This guy here must play D3 a lot cause he has broken it down to a science. May be worth reading.

Wow. Thanks for the help! I went into my BIOS and changed my ram to the setting you recommended and my FPS increased drastically. There are still small instances where my FPS drops to around 20-25 but aside from that I'm always at a solid 45-60 which is more than tolerable for me. I looked on other forums and I guess Diablo 3 is poorly optimized so alot of people have been having FPS problems for quite some time., I'm just glad that this helped me out.
Thanks again.

Will need you to post your specs and problem on a new post so more people will look at it and we can rule out any possible hardware issues.

Based on my experience, your FX 8120 bottlenecked your machine. Your GPU load should be low in diablo 3.
Normally FX 8120 should not bottleneck a 3D game like Tomb Raider 9 or Call of Duty, but Diablo 3 is different.
Diablo 3 is a single threaded intensive game, it highly depends on CPU's single core performance, where AMD is very weak at. According to Passmark, FX 8120's single core performance is only 1216, that is almost 50% of an intel haswell core.
I was in a same situation when I was using AMD X4 840. And now i feel much better with a haswell i5.
