I have started prefering USB versions that have some cradle with an extension cord that allows me to move the antenna away from the computer.

I'd also consider the Router I was connecting to as the primary guidance.

This week, I've turned against TP-Link. That 822 is a favorite on our travels because it will pull in the strongest "N" type signal across every fleabag motel and ritzy joint we stay - more than any DLink, Netgear, Linky or Asus.

But TP-Link offended me - and all of us - because they don't provide Win 8.1 drivers for most of their "N" products. "By a new one! Add to the landfill." What nonsense is that?!! It's maybe an hour-long process to re-spell a few entries, shift a few paragraphs and then recompile the driver. TP-Link should be doing that for years, or else accept to have all of their old products shipped back into THEIR landfill.

(Sadly, there are few older N-adapters that have provided specific and updated Win 8.1 drivers - Netgear's WNA3100 does, and is relatively inexpensive. The volume of widespread avoidance makes me more and more curious about 8.1 driver failures that I've seen in NICs overall.)

I had not heard that about TP-Link, but this nothing new. A ton of hardware, including a printer and a scanner of mine, both from HP, ended up being outdated when we went from Windows 95/98/ME and transitioned to WinXP. I kept a box with ME setup for years after just to use them as they both were fine. Planned obsolescence sucks.
