i'm currently looking to overclock my AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor (thuban) to at least 4.0 ghz using amd overdrive
(cooler) CORSAIR Hydro Series H60
(motherboard)MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3+
(ram)Kingston HyperX blu PC3-12800 (curently running at 1600mhz , 9-9-9-27)
also can you please explain in simple noob terms walk me though it , i am not much into this overclocking. also if doing this in the bios is easier , please tell me what to set the settings at , like which cpu voltage to bump up and what the max is for this processor , and if i need to change anyything else like ram, fsb , ht link thanks

Step one - Set memory to XMP profile.
Step two - increase you multiplier until Windows does not boot any more.
Step three - increase your Vcore voltage until Windows does boot.
Step four - Stability test your CPU with something like Prime 95.
Step five - if it crashes raise your voltage some more.

Rinse and repeat all the while watching your core temperatures to make sure they stay under 90 c. If you system starts getting too hot then that is probably all the higher you are going to over clock unless you get exotic cooling system.

There is usually a sweet spot were you get huge clock gain with little voltage increase needed. After you get past that sweet spot you system starts needing huge amounts of volts to stay stable. I recommend shooting for the sweet spot. If you motherboard supports auto overclocking you might want to start with that because system will do most of this for you.

PS I would stay away from the FSB (aka Base Clock) over clocking because you over clock all of components on the motherboard which involves you messing with QPI and RAM voltages and more items that could be the cause of instability.

alright first of all what is xmp profile and how do i do that? , adhttp:// <~~~this is my options for voltages , i do not see "vcore" which is this one ?
also my motherboard has a thing called "oc genie lite " i turn it on it restarts pc and sets some overclocks on it automatically , can you help me out if this is alright to use i cant seem to find the right information on it.

It looks like it might be the "CPU Voltage". It is called different things depending on the MoBo bios.

As for the XMP profile you ill find that under your DRAM settings. Consult your user manual as to were these are because each BIOS is different.

yeah i wasn't able to find anything for xmp profile on google and i can't find my manual. do i have to overclock the memory, fsb,htt to overclock just the processor ? , also say i give it 4ghz and 1.48 voltage , can you crash from giving it too much voltage ? im trying to figure where to start , becaue i used the "oc genie lite " and i turned it on , it basically overclocks ,and then i would launch windows and try to run prime95 but it crashed, so i kept trying , wasn't able to get to a good point enough to run prime95 , i just couldn't figure if i should increase or decrease voltage , and what other voltages to increase or decrease , such as dram voltage , cpu-nb all of those ... so confusing . there has to be an easier way. and i appreciate your help though

no problem , but once again can you crash from giving it too much voltage ? because i need to know if it crashing because its not enough or too much , and do i have to mess with ram timings / fsb / htt / or any of those voltages or can i leave them on auto , if i am doing just a cpu overclock i want to go to 4ghz without touching any of those just multiplier and cpu voltage , is this possible ? * also i was at 4.2ghz with 1.503 voltage and it crashed , if i move it to the next higher it appears red and says "not reccommended " is it safe to go more than 1.503 on this chip? for 24/7 use ?

No you can not crash by giving it too much voltage but you can over heat the CPU and burn it out. This is why you have to watch your temps when overclocking. The other thing that might happen is you burn out your (Voltage Regulation Modules)VRM on the motherboard if you have a cheap motherboard. They will also start to get hot when overvolting. I believe CPUz will show you your VRM temps or you can use SpeedFan (I think it is Temp2 for VRM).

I personally do not like going much above 1.55v volts and there are others that say you should stay south of 1.5v. This of course all depends on your CPU and Heat Sink.

Not sure if that helps.

Disclaimer:
If you want to start doing extreme overclocking I can not be held responsible if your system is damaged. You should go into extreme overclocking with full knowledge that you may damage your system. (Just a little CYA)

ok i left ram at 1333mhz @ 8-9-9-27 @auto voltage , and Fsb the same at auto , and i pushed cpu with multi to 4ghz @ 1.552v core , after finally getting prime95 to run for 15 minutes while typing this and browsing the web , this is my results , let me know if it's safe , and if i wont lose my motherboard and cpu, will it crash before it burns one of them out ? or can the mobo just shut off and die ? i want to know if it will give me some sort of warning with insability *aalso should have mentioned i have the haf932 case(really good for airflow) and corsair h60 with push/pull airflow from case and exit though rear

it completed with a max temp of 61c after about 20 minutes , i got 1 error on worker 6 .. but it didn't crash .. is this ok?, also could you tell me about what i asked about having some sort of warning to losing my mobo vrm or cpu , will it crash first a few times ? or can it just go out ? i really need to know

For me no because I like my systems to be 100% stable. You might have to settle for a little less overclock but some would say that your system is never going to be loaded like Prime 95 will load it and not to worry. You might want to post your question in a different thread and see what other opinions there are on this.

can someone else help me with this board , i wish to get the highest overclock i am now on stock cooler, pump went out on the h60, what do i need to do ? overclock northbridge to acheive 4ghz with less voltage ? and if so how much for this board . thanks.
