CPU or CPU core temp when setting temp ceiling

Hi All,

Short version: Do I use CPU temp or CPU package temp (core temp) to monitor temperatures when overclocking?

Just wondering if somebody can tell me which temp to use when setting my ceiling. Do I use the "CPU" temp (sensor not very accurate) or the "CPU package" (sensor next to the core and more accurate). At idle these temps are both around 35 degrees but under load the CPU temp will be 40 and my CPU package or core temp will be 60 which is 20 degrees difference.. I understand the 60 degree core temp is the accurate reading however when people are talking about setting their 24/7 general usage temperature ceiling (which seems to range from 55-70 for most people) are they using their CPU temp reading or their CPU core temp reading?

I'm running an i7 2600k OC at 4.4ghz @ 1.275v with a prime95 load temp of 40 degrees (CPU) and 60-65 degrees (highest core temp). I'm using a bequiet dark rock pro 3 (similar to a NHD14) for cooling.

I want to set my load temp ceiling at 65 degrees. I'm curious because if I'm to use the core temp then I'll stay at 4.4ghz but if its the CPU temp (which is at 40 degrees) I can probably push it much further.

Solution
in my experience I use the 75-80C as my barrier while prime testing. this usually translates to less than 70C in all computer use situations.

I always use core temp.
Cores .... but package is usually lower than cores.

These were my "1st day" prime 95 temps after building Son No. 3's last box

Stock 51,53, 53, 51 (1.224) LLC = Auto
4.0 Ghz 52, 54, 55, 52 (1.016-1.024) LLC = Auto
4.2 GHz 54, 56, 57, 55 (1.256 - 1.264) LLC = Auto
4.4 Ghz 56, 60, 60, 67 (1.280 - 1.288) LLC = Auto
4.6 Ghz 62, 66, 68, 65 (1.360 - 1.368) LLC = High
4.8 Ghz 71, 77, 79, 72 (1.408 - 1.416) LLC =Ultra High*

With some twiddling I was later able to bring those 4.8 Ghz temps down a bit .... also did a 5.0 Ghz profile with HT disabled. I didn't mess w/ it long and all those voltages were done on Auto / LLC settings.... given the temps, I didn't bother w/ doing it manually.

Sorry, I use AIDA64 to monitor temps. CPU package in ADIA is whatever the hottest core is.
I get similar readings in hw monitor and coretemp.

Do you run 24/7 with that OC? How long have you been running it?

Son's been running that box pretty much 24/7 since 2011-04-10 ... so 3 years / 5 months at 4.8 Ghz. SLI'd GFX cards have a 25% OC also (all on air). Outside of P95 which I don't use on Haswell, temps never exceed 65 - 68ish

Splendid
I have been running this system for the last couple of years with my overclock. my hyper 212 CPU cooler will handle anything under 1.5v (which kinda sucks because I can run stable at 5.0 but it will overheat ever so slowly, I waited for winter here in phx and put it outside at 3am to test)

I have CF 7950's all on air also

Ahh cool. I'm thinking I'll stay at 4.4ghz then. Coming into summer here will increased ambient by 15 degrees up to 30-45 some days So will see how we go. Thanks for the info.

I'm actually getting slightly lower temps with my dark rock pro 3 compared to my DH-14 and it's quieter than most rads I've listened to. The room my PC is in cops the afternoon sun though and in summer gets quite hot in there so I may look at a liquid cooling option in summer if it gets too hot.
