So I'm running 2 saphire vapor-x 290x gpu's which have led's on them to indicate heat level. The top one turned red when playing sniper elite 3 on ultra settings which I think means it was around 80 degrees Celsius and I'm wondering if it's bad for the card to run that hot.

Use a GPU temps monitoring program like MSI afterburner to monitor actual temps. Touching (not maintaining) 80C for a couple of seconds is fine, unless you're touching 92C+ repeatedly, its all good. LED will give you a basic idea but precise readings are better.

Quote:

Blue (0 to 60C), Yellow (60 to 80C) and Red (80C or higher). The tolerance for the changing LED colors is +/- 5C, so this will give you a rough idea of the GPU temperatures without needing additional software if you have a case window that allows you to see your card.

So if it was staying in the 80 degree range that's bad?

If its around the 80C mark (not the 90C) while on intensive parts on ultra settings, its fine, considering its CFed, I can expect 5-10C higher temps so those temps are fine too :)
