Hi,
I just built my first completely from scratch build and of course it's not working.
Immediately after turning on the power I get a quick red flash from the CPU_LED light as all the fans spin up and the HDD ticks a bit. After that there's just nothing. The fans continue to spin, no other LEDs flash at all and it'll sit like that until I turn it off.
Components:
AMD Athlon x4 750k
Asus A85-M2
Thermaltake 600w psu
Radeon HD6970
Team Vulcan 2x4 GB ram

I've tried a different PSU (430w thermaltake) I've tried taking out the gpu just to see if I could get a beep, but nothing. I've taken out and cleaned up the CPU of excess thermal paste and reseated correctly beyond a shadow of a doubt. I checked the Mobo's cpu compatibility list and BIOS version and this CPU has been supported since revision 0304 and this mobo is at 0702 if its still the last four of the S/N. I tried one RAM stick, with and without HDD, on board graphics VGA out, discrete graphics HDMI out. I tried the GPU without the 6 and 8 pin connector trying to get a beep from the mobo, but still nothing. Is there some glaring problem that I've overlooked? Appreciate the help.

TR2 430W and TR2 600w

The 430w is known working.

I fracking knew, KNEW, it. Every single TR2 PSU I've ever tried to use or that anybody on this forum who had a PSU problem with a thermaltake PSU was using a TR2. They are about the worst ever made and are almost absolutely without doubt your problem. It's on tier five of the PSU tier list which is the remove and discard immediately level. Here is a link to that list.

Funny how Tiger direct and a few others keeps selling this shitty ass PSU. Also funny that the TR2 is what originally brought me to Tom's.

So was mine. Ahem. Working, and working right ain't the same. And working in one system with less demand on the PSU and one with a big card and lot's of CPU is a different ballgame too. Of course you could have a different problem, it could be a number of things. Including that cheap ass PSU having damaged your motherboard or other components. I'd start with getting a real PSU first though. Nomatter what else is going on, you don't want to leave that PSU in any computer you care about.

Well, that's both comforting and scary. Hopefully nothing else is messed up and hopefully that's the issue. I'm dying to get this thing working so I'll probably pick up a new one tomorrow and see how it goes. I'll report whatever I find here.

Make sure whatever PSU you get, the brand AND model match one of the models listed on the Tier 3 or above on the tier list. Preferably at least Tier 2b. Some of the tier 3 PSU's, while ok, don't last much beyond their warranty period if they even make it that far.

I was just going to pick up the Corsair CX series since they have it at a best buy close to me. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/corsair-cx-series-modular-c...

That's actually the main one I was referring to from the Tier 3 selections that's dubious. Some people have good luck with them but a lot of people have had issues. It's worlds better than that TR2 though.

Went ahead and picked up the CX750M, it was the best they had at Best Buy. Set it all up and same exact thing. What gives? Bad mobo?

I think I figured it out, but I'm in class so I won't know until I get back. I didn't realize that the little blue caps on a couple pins at the bottom of the board were the CMOS jumpers so I just took them off. Classic beginner move. Hopefully that's it.

Well, you probably don't want them removed. You just want them in the correct position. You'll need to look at the manual for the board and see where the "normal" position versus the "clear cmos" which resets the bios to default state is. There should only be one jumper that sits in one of two positions on three little pins.

If you removed two blue jumpers you need to put the other one back exactly in the same spot it came from. The normal position for the cmos jumper is position 1-2. Clear is position 2-3. Check the manual for your board to verify jumper pin positions. By the way, are you sure that's not an F2A85-M2. I can't find anything on just an A85-M2. If it is the F2A85-M2 then here is the manual:

Here's an image of the jumper settings:

It is the F2A85-M2. But I've got it all settled now. I troubleshooted the gfx card for the longest time and I didn't have the other end of the HDMI cord plugged into the monitor....................... That's the kind of week it's been. Oh well. Thanks for your help!

Ha, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, that's good shit. Sorry, I don't mean to laugh at your expense but it's been that kind of week for me too so that was actually kinda like comedy relief. I'm very glad you got it worked out though man. Good luck to you and if you find you need further help later on don't hesitate to ask. Take care.
