Cheap stop gap for an older PC, I've added Kingston HX318C10FK2/8 kit to the board and it now fails to boot, not even BIOS starts up.

Could not find a reason as to why the RAM Would not be compatible with the board despite its age?

The mobo specs - https://www.asus.com/au/Motherboards/M4A785TDV_EVO/specifications/ - say

4 x DIMM, Max. 16 GB, DDR3 1800(O.C.)*/1600(O.C.)/1333/1066/800 ECC,Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
Dual Channel memory architecture
*Due to OS limitation, when installing total memory of 4GB capacity or more, Windows® 32-bit operation system may only recognize less than 3GB. Install a 64-bit WindowsWindows® OS when you want to install 4GB or more memory on the motherboard.

Your ram - http://www.kingston.com/datasheets/HX318C10FK2_8.pdf - is 1866 1.5v cl 10

Its too fast for your mobo.
