Using two WiFi routers on the home network?

I live in a rented accommodation. The owner lives right below. He has a broadband internet connection and uses a DSL modem with a single Ethernet port to which is connected a WiFi router. He connects to the internet through this WiFi router via his laptop through its WiFi network.

In an attempt to share his internet connection with me, I went ahead and bought the exact same WiFi router as his(Dlink) along with a 20m cat5 Ethernet cable. I connected one end of the cable to one of the 4 Ethernet ports of his router and the other end to mine.

Even though I can access the internet, the problem is that, neither can we use the internet at the same time nor can we set different passwords for each router separately. I cannot even access my router configuration page on 192.168.0.1/index.asp

Although, from my laptop, I do have access to his broadband modem configuration page at: 192.168.1.1

Can somebody please help me fix this? We both need to be able to assign separate passwords to our WiFi networks as we live on different floors. Also, can the use of a multiple Ethernet port modem for the home network solve the problem? That way we can connect our routers on different Ethernet ports on the same modem which may be able to resolve an IP conflict.

Solution
set the IP setting as something like below

I suppose broadband modem's IP is 192.168.1.1 as per your description.

Then change the IP of other person's wifi router as 192.168.1.50
Set his DHCP Pool to 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.49

Then your wifi router's IP as 192.168.1.100
Set your DHCP Pool to 192.168.1.51 - 192.168.1.99

now you can access your router's settings on 192.168.1.100 and set your wifi password. And he can set his wifi password by accessing 192.168.1.50 settings page.

Hope this resolves your issue. Good luck.
