Graphics card surgery?

Hey guys,

My computer wouldn't boot up a few weeks ago. The windows logo animation would show, then the screen would stay blank, never making it to the account login screen. I tried everything I could think of, software and hardware, and I am 95% sure it's a hardware problem with my gpu. My question is this:

Is finding the problem with my video card and fixing it plausible at all? I've seen posts about replacing capacitors and stuff but don't know if that's what's wrong. I haven't taken it apart or anything, but is it even worth my time? It's a sapphire radeon hd 6870, if it matters.

Also, if all else fails, I might try this, but don't want to risk it if I can fix it manually. http://www.overclockers.com/the-oven-trick-repairing-your-broken-video-card-with-an-oven/

We've been through a lot together, and I'd like to bring her back if possible.

Any advice or input will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Boot in to Safe Mode.

Set your desktop resolution to 800x600.

Boot Windows normally.

If that doesn't work then repeat the steps above but instead of Safe Mode boot Windows without the Graphics Card installed, and then set the desktop resolution to 800x600. Switch off the PC, reinstall the card and restart Windows.

That's a long-shot, but might work.

I've already tried that sadly, and it didn't work. I'm fairly sure it's some hardware problem, but I don't know how to single out the problem.

Does anyone know what people who repair or refurbish graphics cards do? Like at computer repair shops or something?

I found this on a website called tfixrepairs.com:
"No video display, loss of signal during usage can indicate the problem with the core. If the computer does not start with the card installed and PCI-E power plugged in there is a high chance of voltage regulator (VRM), mosfet failures."
"Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM), Mosfets often have no cooling option. They use phases the same way your motherboard does, often 2 phases for the core and 1 for the memory. During VRM failure red light errors on HD48xx cards are caused and they also cause failures on earlier revisions of the GTX 5 series."

Not too familiar with any of this, but I'm willing to tamper and learn.

Thanks again
