Greetings,

I'm building a new PC however I know absolutly nothing about PSUs, so I was wondering if someone could recomend a PSU (or at least the watts needed for my system).

My system is:

  • - Gigabyte GTX780
    - MSI z97 Gaming 9 Motherboard
    - i5-4690k (Devil's Canyon)
    - Samsung 250gb SSD 840 EVO
    - Kingston HyperX Beast 8gb (2x4gb)
    - Aerocool Xpredator X1 Midi Tower

According to the CoolMaster Power Supply Calculator I need 470w (although it doesn't have Devil Canyon CPUs or SSDs) but according eXtreme Power Supply Calculator I need 650w, hence why I'm not sure what to go for.

Thank you in advance,
Aterin

The real power draw would be closer to 400W but for reliability and efficiency reasons, you generally do not want to run PSUs much beyond 60-70% load and that is where you end up with a 650W recommendation.

Quality is every bit as important as quantity though, so you want to stick to tiers 1 and 2 on the list below if possible, maybe tier 3 in a pinch.

+1 for the Seasonic M12II 620.

I run this power supply in my rig and pulling from the mains on Idle it only uses 46w and under full load with my new R9-280x it only pulls 290w. Also the fan is very quiet and hardly ever speeds up, never gets warm at all.

A supply rated at 470W or 39A on the +12V rails would be fine (up to 80% of rated load on the +12V rails).
Some suggestions:
EVGA Supernova G2 750W (higher rating than needed, but often very good prices on this supply)
XFX TS 550 (650 is OK too of course)
Seasonic G 550 (650 is OK too of course)
Seasonic S12G 550 (650 is OK too of course)
Seasonic M12II 620 recommended above is very good quality, but not cheap and it is 80 plus bronze rated where other supplies I have listed are 80 plus gold rated (more efficient).

I take the ratings with a little bit of a pinch of salt, I would be amazed if a gold rated power supply would drop my idle load much lower than it's current <50w enough to make the purchase price worth it.

Thank you all for your replies!

I'm getting all my components from Overclockers, the only Seasonic PSU they have is the Seasonic M12II EVO 850w at £80, isn't that a bit overkill (even more so since I don't intend on overclocking)? My budget for a PSU is around £60, here's their PSUs ranging from 450w to 650w: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=701&catid=123&sortby=priceAsc&subid=2463&mfrid=

I can't see any Tier 1 or 2 PSU's within my budget, I was initially thinking about the Corsair CX 600w but I notice it's in Tier 3, is it really that bad?

I have a Corsair CX650w in my backup machine, it's decent but it uses over 100w more on my backup machine under load and it's only an FX4100 with a GTX560Ti ... so I would not recommend if you can push the boat out.

It isn't free delivery to the EU I'm afraid and that's only £9 bellow the 850w, if I were to overbudget I might as well go for the 850w...

Corsair CX series are considered to have a shorter life span due to cheap capacitors. OK in budget builds.
Don't skimp on a power supply and risk your expensive components.
I would suggest this:

With respect, when you go out and buy:

- Gigabyte GTX780
- MSI z97 Gaming 9 Motherboard
- i5-4690k (Devil's Canyon)
- Samsung 250gb SSD 840 EVO
- Kingston HyperX Beast 8gb (2x4gb)

You really should budget £100 for a power supply minimum, It's like buying a Ferrari and converting it to LPG. My power supply is one of the most expensive parts of my rig as I bought all the rest second hand off ebay. The power supply was new and was the most I could afford. It's arguably the most important part of any gaming machine. Without stable solid power delivery you are not doing your new component's justice.

Certainly not enough to replace a good quality 80 plus bronze rated unit with an 80 plus gold model, but if buying a new supply there isn't any great extra cost to get an 80 plus gold rated unit of similar quality.

I never realized the PSU was so important, I always saw it just a min wattage value.

Thank you all for your answers, without your aid I would have ended up buying the wrong PSU. Decided to go for the SuperFlower Leadex GOLD 650W, it's Tier 1 so I assume it's quite good :)

Almost no single-GPU system actually uses more than 450W so if you tack a 50% margin for aging, long-term reliability and other considerations, you end up with 600-650W as a pretty generic blind recommendation.

I'm currently living in Portugal, I don't know many computer shops here since I've only recently moved, but the main retailers are actually more expensive than OC (even with the shipping costs).
