Hello I recently built my friend a budget gaming pc ( for around $400) he didn't have enough for a psu so I put a 300w psu I had laying around into the system we are going to get a new one tomorrow but I had some questions

Would the low power psu be causing his games to crash and blue screen
(My guess is yes but I wanted to ask here)

Cpu: amd fx 4300
Ram: 4gb 1333
storage: 500gb 7200 rpm hdd
Gpu: gt 630

does this help?

Sorry, I accidentally fat-fingered on the "Mark as Solution" button. :(

But yes, it does help.

You still didn't specify the PSU Make/model (unless my eyes are playing up worse than usual), but even so it's possible that you are within power spec, since the GT 630 specifications suggest a 300W PSU.

That means you may be close and in "normal" (what the heck is normal??) situations the systems should have adequate power. That strongly suggest that there may be another reason for blue-screening.

Another contributor has already linked you to an aid for determining BSOD causes. Use that. Also do install the new PSU and let's see. I'm thinking it's 50-50 that you'll be back here after install.

That GT630 card is old, it may well be a cause, or if you scavenged the HDD there may be issues on that. SMART analysis of the HDD can be insightful.

MEMTEST on the memory might be useful as well.

I don't agree, if it is an old 300w PSU especially it will not be powerful enough to run that system. A BSOD can be caused by many things but if I was troubleshooting that rig the first thing I would do is change the PSU. Using a plug power monitor, as I mentioned above, my FX-4100 system pulls 370w at the wall...

You may well be right, we're shooting in the dark here.

The FX-4300 he has uses 95W at maximum. Who can tell how much his system draws? You don't mention what GPU you're running - that accounts for the majority of the power in any event.

Ok we got a new psu (needed regardless) no change..

Then today got a new gpu (really cheap one but its more powerful than the gt 630 and supports crossfire) still. no change

So im just going to do the BlueScreenView thing see if i can figure it out

I know this thread is dead, but just in case anyone is searching for something and finds it. Just a little correction here, a 4300 has a TDP of 95w. That's it's thermal design power, this is not its maximum power draw it is very different. It could potentially draw more than 95w although probably not over sustained periods, it will then throttle itself if it starts to generate too much heat over it's TDP. This is especially true if it is overclocked.
