Hi there,

This will probably make many of you facepalm but i am very confused with the whole SATA thing.
My main issue is the SATA ports on my MoBo and SATA III compatibility, or better said, my lack of knowledge of it since i'm very new to the whole pc-building scene.

What confuses me is this;
I have a SATAIII SSD and a SATAIII HDD.
My MoBo is a ASUS M5a97 R2.0 that sports 6 SATA 6Gb/s ports.
Now my questions begin... i hope you can answer them all cause i'm very confused with this:

1) is SATA = SATA I ? cause i learned that SATA I are limited to 150MB/s, did i buy a fast SSD for nothing?
But it's a new board and it says 6Gb/s, that got me very confused.

2) Do i need a special cable to connect from SATAIII to those SATA 6Gb/s ports?

3) same question as 2) but now with Optical Drives.

I hope someone can help me fast.
And sorry if this is a very stupid question. i just want to be sure before i mess something up...

Solution
after researching your motherboard. you have sata 3 ...i guess asus didn't mention that. question 2. no you don't need any special cable just regular sata cable. and the 3rd it doesn't matter as your motherboard have 6x SATA 3,

Alright, thanks!

With "Regular" SATA cables i figure you mean SATAIII cables since you confirmed that my MoBo has SATAIII as do my drives.
Is that correct?
(I'm asking cause my local store sells cables simply named SATA-cable and dedicated SATAIII-cables)
