so i saw a youtube comment saying that u shoulnt buy the X versjon of amd gpus because their basicly the same as the normal ones just not overclocked. Is this true? Im planning on overclocking anyway so does it give the same performance?? Does the X only mean OC'ed??

More about : 280 280x

No , the X means that its a better variant ( Higher Performance ) card.

In some cases the non-X can reach the X performance when overclocked like the 270 and 270X , For example A MSI Gaming R9 270 when oc will perform almost identical to a stock R9 270X non overclocked however you can also overclock the 270x which means that if you will be getting the 270x and won't overclock it then you're better off getting a 270 and oc it to 270x levels.

That's only part of the truth as the X versions can also be overclocked and in your case the 280 will not perform as the 280x due to differences in hardware and here are the benchmarks : http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2014/05/19/am...

No that's not true in general. The 280X has 2048 shaders, the 280 only has 1792 shaders. The 280 is a 280X where one eighth of the front end of the GPU has been disabled, and the stock clocks are slightly lower.

It's true for the 270 and 270X though. They have exactly the same amount of shaders etc. and the only difference is clocks.

No, the X gives a little difference. Basically, you can OC a non-X GPU to an X GPU's STOCK performance, but with an X GPU you get higher performance, and you can overclock it even more.

Search for just about any 280/280X review - nearly all of them have a table comparing the two.

The 280X has 256 extra stream units and 16 extra texture units on top of the 250MHz higher baseline memory speed and 66MHz higher core clock.

So the 280X has a ~15% advantage over the non-X in the hardware itself.

I think we all just posted at the same time. I didn't see either of your posts while writing mine.

No, you were just talking about performance and overclocking. My point is that the 280X has more hardware resources, so at the same clocks it will be faster than the 280.

read exactly what I've said here's the quote : and in your case the 280 will not perform as the 280x due to differences in hardware .

Difference in Hardware that's it.

Thats not true, the r9 280x has more texture mapping units onboard (128 units) vs 112 units on the r9 280. Essentially you can overclock the r9 280 to match the r9 280x performance on stock, but then the r9 280x can also be overclocked which puts it way ahead.
Nope,the X doesn't mean overclocked:
R9 280 is a rebranded 7950 w/ boost
R9 280x is a rebranded 7970 Ghz Edition
