My x4 750k's temps are insane..help!

Some specs before I begin:
Mobo-MSI FM2-A75MA-E35
CPU-x4 750k, aftermarket aluminum cooler
GPU-Radeon 7770 HD
Other specs not too important for this.

I've probably looked at every single one of these related threads for this CPU getting hot and can't seem to fix my own problem. I looked at HWMonitor to find my CPU idling at around 50-55C..which is pretty warm, when playing games as minimalistic as CS:GO I find the temps shooting up to 74C(the max temp for this CPU) which is insane to see.

When I touch the CPU cooler, to the touch it is warm, but by no means hot.

I've seen all offered solutions from, re-apply thermal paste(used stock paste on aftermarket cooler; will aftermarket thermal paste make a significant enough temp decrease?), reset bios to get standard voltage(which I've done), get a new cooler, ( which I've done-didn't help) or maybe my temperature gauge is broken..yada yada yada. has anyone ever fixed this same problem from high temps back to acceptable, safe temps? Could anyone offer any new/working advice for me please? Would be greatly appreciated, seeing as I love to game, and any downtime, is, well, a bummer.

Solution
Ho hum.

(assuming you have Windows 7, 64-bit.)

The Utility, listed at the bottom, called "Control Center" should contain the temperature monitoring tool, so you can observe the same temperature sensor as your BIOS, but be at your desktop.

Aida64 is the only other program I can think of you to try, off hand. I know there are more, but I can't remember their names.

(Are you using Prime95 to stress test?)

It's a Thermaltake TR2-R1

I dont have too much knowledge on aftermarket coolers, could this be the reason it doesnt cool down? should I get one with copper piping?

There are 2 fans in the case, one in front one in back.

CPU HAS been OC'd by BIOS Genie in the past, but returned to default standard settings when I reset BIOS.

The HSF is on correctly. Hmmm i didn't realize that, maybe I will splurge a bit more and see if a better quality cooler would do the trick

Okay I just went to Fry's and picked up a Zalman CNPS5x Performa. Has a 4 star rating on Newegg with hundreds of positive reviews saying it worked. Went to Bios, to find the temp had dropped about 8-10 degrees. However, when I check HWMonitor from desktop it's telling me the same readings of over 75C in game. I'm beginning to think that HWMonitor is absolute crap..at least I hope that's what is wrong..

Hard thing is I don't want to game anymore for fear of ruining my CPU.

A 92mm heatsink isn't going to cut it. The first one you put on, the TR2-1R is pretty similar to the old AM2 stock heatsink so its a significant step down, the CNPS5X is only a 92mm heatsink so it isn't going to do great, it should be doing better than stock though.

How did you install it? How did you apply the paste? How did you tighten it down?

FrostyTech puts the CNPS5X at 19.1C with a 125W load which isn't great, most of the 120mm coolers come in at 15C or less, they have the Hyper 212 Evo at 12.8C above ambient with a 125W load so you'd see a decent drop from moving up to a full sized cooler.

Something you will come to learn in time, newegg reviews don't mean crap for performance, they only tell you about weird issues and DOA rates. People 5 star because it worked at all, and 1 star because UPS took an extra day....

For the installation I put a pea sized dot in the middle, put it on top, latched the sides, and screwed it tight.

Another thing I might need to mention, as I've started looking at other possible factors, is that I live in a house with no AC and the room temps are around 80F which I'm wondering could be affecting my cpu. The question is though, how much can a room's temp affect a CPU, with adequate cooling?

So going back to the 120mm coolers, do you think it will help even with my hot room situation, or am I doomed until I get AC?

APU-based CPUs sometimes have erroneous temperature readings.

My A10-5800K gets no less than four different temperature readings. It took me a lot of cross-referencing to finally figure out which is the correct one.

So try Core-Temp, Speedfan, AMD Overdrive, and whatever your mobo's onboards software is. Post screen shots of when at-idle and at-load, so we can help you figure this out.

It's so weird, my HWMonitor and AMD OverDrive temps seem to swap high and low with eachother.

Okay so at idle I'm getting:
Coretemp: 0C
AMD OverDrive: 65C
HWMonitor: 52C

Undder load I'm getting:
Coretemp:0C
AMD OverDrive: 40C
HWMonitor:75C

The temp actually goes DOWN from idle on AMD Overdrive. I hope these are my true readings, I would be ecstatic with 40c under load.

Still SO CONFUSED

AMD Overdrive, with its newest iterations, actually displays your Thermal Margin. In other words, the amount of degrees you have until you reach your maximum temperature. I *think* it's normalized at 70C, which means that you're at ~30C for at-load temperatures, according to that temperature monitoring program. That isn't too far off, for stock performance and an aftermarket cooler.

What does your onboard motherboard temperature monitoring software say? (And/or Speedfan?)

Hmm that's interesting I hadn't heard of that.

At BIOS mobo is reading no higher than 48C..and unfortunately speedfan doesn't detect my CPU so can;t use that for reference.
