HATE Windows 8, and if I'd known I could not downgrade the 84-bit W8 to W7 like Sony Reps promised (lied to sell $1500 laptop), would have at least bought a TOUCH laptop. Windows will go to version 9 before they ever get W8 sorted out. LIKE W7 and really don't want to go to the trouble to LEARN W8. Sony laptop has sat for a year and if needed will buy a Macbook as I'm done being Windows practice center.

Solution

Can't do that. The Asus Windows, just like Dell, Gateway, etc. is TIED to the hardware. It won't let you circumvent, reinstall nothing once it determines the hardware (Maker, model, CPU, Mobo and sometimes case) are different. ONLY if you BOUGHT the Windows outright (go to Walmart, grab box off shelf) can you 'move' windows from one computer to another. You would need to buy a brand new copy of Windows 7, which isn't available at stores.

Well I think your hatred (which I empathize) has stopped you from making the 'changes' that make 8 more 7. First off you shelved the laptop for a year, so there is both the 8.1 patch (only delivered through the Microsoft 'Store') then the 8.1 Update that both switch it from the 'touch screen' chiclets to the 'normal' start menu, never mind the easy addons (and free) that have been availabile since the first month of Windows 8 release with a simple google:

http://www.classicshell.net/
http://www.extremetech.com/computing/141702-how-to-bring-the-start-menu-and-button-back-to-windows-8
http://www.iobit.com/iobitstartmenu8.php

That all said (as that is probably the biggest issue your demonstrating) you HAVE TO update to 8.1 then 8.1 update to receive ANY patches and fixes. As you noted 9 is about (next month I believe) be released for the masses, this means W7 is as expected going to be shelved like all the other older OSes, so going backwards MAY NOT BE VIABLE for such a product (Sony has to provide all the right drivers, for example to get the 'top row' buttons for sound, wifi on/off, etc. to work MAY BE ONLY Windows 8 coded).

As for moving to a new SSD, unless you can make a backup copy of Windows 8 (which is something that seems to be not possible in the Lenovo Thinkpad2 I own, many other 'slim laptops' and tablets) you will have to PAY Sony for a recovery CD. Now normally MANY of the SSD makers (all depends whom you bought) include a SATA to USB3 cable and software 'kit' that lets you replicate your current drive to the SSD, then simply swap drives, plug in the HDD with the cable to the USB3 port and WIPE the HDD before mounting it (you need to buy a secondary mounting HDD kit seperately from ALL laptop makers, else the drive 'bangs around' inside) as a second drive for your true storage (your SSD is limited in space and fills up quickly).

They APPEAR to be trying to get W9 out with the 2014 Holiday season according to many resources.

The preview of 9 will likely be more stable than the POS called 8.1. If windows 7 VS vista SP2 is any lead.

I am sick of my 2.4ghz i7 being a 1.2ghz netbook because windows 8.1 pro wants to be a green <mod edit>. I am also sick of all the software that doesn't work on it but did on 7. Oh and that stupid half baked shut down thing really can screw up. (Why did they ever think the hybrid shutdown was ever a good idea for an OS that needs to be stable I have no idea. Oh look it booted 2 sec faster to then return to the bad state because it didn't do a real old school shut down.)

I 100% understand why the OP would want to upgrade to the far more stable win 7. If wanting an OS that works like it should is a downgrade, then okay you win.

The OP should call Sony and complain that there reps lied. Maybe then they would give you a free copy of windows 7 to use like they should have done in the first place. If not then you will have to buy a copy and then do a clean install because you can't "downgrade" and save anything. So do a back up of anything you need before installing windows 7.

Responding:
First, TOM, you are 100% correct in your assessment; however, In addition to my ISSUES with W8 (there wasn't an update 8.1 a year ago), ... there is a 'HATRED' due to being outright LIED to by Sony reps. You do not set aside an expensive (for me) laptop ( Sony (SVS13A290X) custom ordered with carbon fiber, discrete graphics, BluRay Burner drive,a~1/4" thick Slice battery doubling battery life mated to bottom of laptop ) without some deliberation. Did spend that year, trying to get Sony to honor our deal or return for credit against touch laptop- no success). . Had Sony been HONEST on the W8 issue, a similar model with a touch screen would've been purchased Did spend an honest 40 hours ++ trying to downgrade, many hours trying to have Sony exchange laptops, then days spent trying to work with W8, including burning system backup discs manufacturers no longer include- NO success. Only THEN was the Sony set aside for emergencies, if and when the principal ASUS laptop died (use HDMI cord to IPS panel, a full size keyboard and mouse, using laptop as a desktop computer.).

Second: Tom, NO POINT IN REHASHING ANCIENT HISTORY. Reasons for the Questions on Tom's Hardware was to find the BEST WAY to move forward today. Clarification from your email:

#1- You mentioned, ..... " MANY of the SSD makers (all depends whom you bought) include a SATA to USB3 cable and software 'kit' that lets you replicate your current drive to the SSD, then simply swap drives, plug in the HDD with the cable to the USB3 port and WIPE the HDD before mounting it, ... "
Do you have a specific cable set or software you'd recommend to 'CLONE' the W7 Op system directly from the Asus W7 laptop, directly to the Sony laptop after the new SSD drive is installed? When installing a new 480GB SSD drive in the Sony laptop to replace a 5400rpm with 500GB HDD, that should be a clean install- correct?
Is there is a specific program and/or set of cables to transfer data from one laptop to another which you've found to be reliable? Or a specific brand or items which other members found that works? There's no point in my reinventing the wheel on this. (my equip: ASUS G51 model has an eSATA port available and the Sony has an USB 3.0 port ) ,

#2- You mentioned ... "(you need to buy a secondary mounting HDD kit seperately from ALL laptop makers, else the drive 'bangs around' inside) ... ".
The he Sony's existing 500 GB HDD is a 7mm thick drive. The new Intel SSD is a 7mm 480GB drive. I'm expecting the 7mm SSD to be a 'drop in' part; without additional adapters, etc. IF wrong, what should I be looking for?
Will look into the links you provided; as well as MaxPC articles I've saved in past year. There is no warranty, so the current plan is to install SSD drive (480GB) and either W7 or some other op system to use this laptop. Since I'd prefer having W7 and need to transfer FILES and programs on the ASUS to the Sony anyway, CLONING would be great if it works. Thank you for your time in responding . davzway

ps: YES. I know I'll have to deal with W8 at some point, or deal with W9. May even be driven to using Apple's OP system :) :)

Buy a 7mm thick drive
Verify that there are Windows 7 drivers for your hardware
Buy Windows 7
Install the drive
Install the OS

Done.

Or...update to Win 8.1
Change properties to boot directly to Desktop mode
Never see the Metro interface unless you really need to

Done.

Can't do that. The Asus Windows, just like Dell, Gateway, etc. is TIED to the hardware. ONLY if you BOUGHT the Windows outright (go to Walmart, grab box off shelf) can you 'move' windows from one computer to another. You would need to buy a brand new copy of Windows 7, which isn't available at stores.

Clean installs or starting from a 'baseline image' is always the best solution.

Not really, I mean unless you went real cheapo on the cable would I question one maker over another. But that is where your SOny is setup, you replicate from HDD to SDD, swap the SSD in and your done (hardware replacement). This has nothing to do with any eSATA or a ASUS. What your suggesting is totally NOT originally what we were discussing, your saying a much more cumbersome situation with multiple PC, replacement of hardware AND replacement of OS. I would take a step back from this.

If I needed to 'move' from one old computer to new one, I would run Windows Easy Transfer on the old computer (ASUS) to a external drive, then replace the Sony HDD with the SSD, install Windows and get it all setup, make backup copy to the ext drive then restore via Windows Easy Transfer, DONE. Same desktop, same icons, etc.

You completely over looked the KEYWORDS. I said, you would swap the HDD for the SSD, NORMAL people don't spend $300-400 for a SSD as big as your saying. What normally happens is they have a HDD (7200RPM 1TB ) for only $70 already IN the case or upgrading to it, they then hear about SSD and want to pick up a equally priced one, which would be like the Samsung 840 EVO, 250GB SSD for around $100. They slap in the SSD, then want the 'extra space' from the 1TB, here is where YOUR problem comes in: you need to buy a secondary mounting HDD kit seperately because while there is room for two hard drive, there is ONLY ONE mounting rack / kit in the case, no matter the size (7mm or 2.5mm) and you have TWO drives. Hence why I suggested (before you talked about spending so much money) as I did.

As I mentioned this plan fails for critically key component W7 wont' work on anything but that make / model machine. NO you can NEVER transfer programs, you have to reinstall them no matter what. You can transfer your data (as I maid mention with WET) and do SOMETHING like what your plan is (see my steps above) but that again is building the computer 'image' by hand first, all the software, patches, etc. all done first befoe restoring WET

W7 works with everything except DVD burner which only has xp drivers. Mfgr. hasn't updated to W7, guess to force purchase of new equipment. Something made actually lasts, then made obsolete by software What a world.

reply: That's why I came back to Toms Hardware, as I've been getting so much 'advise' which was contrary, it was time to go where there's usually knowledgeable folks. Have to give some thought to this. Likely better to just buy Windows program, install on new SSD and be done with it.

In a LAPTOP, there is room in the mounting bay, to install a second drive if you have the right bracket. Per Sony, HDD was 7mm, which is why a 7mm SSD was purchased in similar size, hdd-500GB, ssd-48GB, even though no programs are there which didn't come originally. Thanks again, dave

Sony chose not to build and release relevant drivers.

I have a Dell laptop (1 of many). 1998 vintage. 16 years old, and it works perfectly. Currently swap drives between Win 2000 and Linux.
However, I highly doubt I could get Win 7 or Win 8 running on it. At all. Ever. Or even XP.
Something that lasts, made obsolete? No....time marches on.

If the Sony rep lied and categorically stated you could install Win 7 on that..and you can't...well...he lied. Or simply clueless (most likely).
That is between you and Sony.

Why I came back to Tom's Hardware. Been getting too many conflicting 'opinions' which don't sound plausible.
I never bought into the 'program' and cables idea which would 'CLONE' the entire drive of an ASUS onto a Sony laptop; any more than I did using a W7 for ASUS on the Sony. It's like the CABLES being sold with yellow/red/white RCA plugs at one end, with an HDMI plug at the other end, saying they can change an analog signal into a digital signal. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN IN THIS LIFE.

Question is back to either BUY W7 (which everything I have works with) or wait for W9 which it appears is close (September 30, 2014) but W9, which I've seen very little in facts, may not work any better than initial W8 since Microsoft uses us for testing products. Windows Media Center which doesn't seem to work on W8 (haven't 'tried' W8.1, so I'd have to rely on others who've made WMC work on W8.1). Have a 500GB and a 1TB hard drive external units to back up the 8.0 (use 500GB to back up W8 on HDD)..

It seems most use HDD for backup, vs DVD discs. Initially I tried 32GB USB key per magazine article, didn't work even though FILE size was less than usb key.. Likely did a step wrong somewhere.

Question outstanding:
Been too many years since I've swapped a drive in a laptop. There is enough space when mfgr. claims the HDD is 7mm (500gb), for TWO drives? The Intel SSD is 7mm. Was looking for a drop in and not expecting to need another bracket. If both 7mm drives will work in the laptop, what 'description' should be searched for to adapt the second drive in the laptop. If ONE fits, I'd just as soon use 3.0 USB and external HDD for added storage.

Full release for Win 9 will not be until sometime next year. Sept 30 is, at most, a tech preview.

For an internal SSD in that Sony, a 7mm should work no problem. I'd have to eyeball the specific mount to be sure. But it should just screw in, just like any other drive.
The only concern is 7mm vs 9.5mm for a 2.5" drive. Some laptops accept either, some (ultrabooks, primarily) only the thinner 7mm drive.
Length and width are the same, only the thickness varies.

Responding: USAFRet has it right. I go back to having DOS on computers and Windows (3?) was great compared to DOS. Look at where Apple has gone since Steve Jobs took over the last time (great payback for kicking him out of the company he and Wozinsky ? started). Most successful company in the world, having what ? some $380 Billion in cash reserves , that's $ with a B. But this question isn't about Apple.

Did all that was suggested and more with Sony. Sony is great when it come to reps opening up a 'Case Number',, but NOTHING gets done. Have at least four case # in past 10-12 months. Will try one last time and push for Sony sending W7 op system disc, which will make us 'even' insofar as the original purchase. Whether I go to W9 or the fully 'developed' W8 remains to be seen. May end up buying a Mac book laptop and be done with it. I know they are more expensive, particularly adding in 'Apple Care' for an extended warranty ; HOWEVER, YOU HAVE AN ENGLISH SPEAKING REP WHO KNOWS SOMETHING, WHO WILL SPEND HOURS WITH ON THE PHONE OR ONLINE, if you cannot get to an Apple Store. Apple products tend to work (more so than other mfgr.'s), and their support cannot be bettered anywhere. Next cell phone, and likely tablet will be Apple when I can get up the $$.

Still ancient history. Need to make changes that work to have programs that WORK without a great deal of hassle or effort every time they're used. Original W8 was designed to tablets or at least TOUCH screen products; however they made it their NEW OP SYS for computers. Try to use Windows Media Center with W8.

Got the answers (Thanks guys) for having the W7 op system (or groan W8 updated) on new SSD in the Sony.

Still confused on how much space is available in Sony when swapping the500Gb HDD (7mm) for the new SSD 480GB 7mm drive. If it fit, prefer to just to a swap of HDD for the SSD; having no interest in added storage Inside the Sony laptop, preferring to use external HDD for that purpose. Is the 7mm SSD a drop in , no other parts required, exchange for the existing 7mm HDD with 500GB. Thanks again, davzway

You are 100% right on drive thickness... and I did check... Really a different issue, but in case you know : My 13" compact Sony (SVS13A290X) has a 7mm drive for HDD (500GB), which is why I only looked at 7mm thickness (not 9.5mm) for 2.5" drives. FYI,,, I've learned to also check the WATTS used by a Drive at both IDLE and when under LOAD.... normally SSD compared to HDD use less watts, are faster so time being used is less, and normally generate less heat; and I was looking for quality and longevity in the SSD -- more so than Speed and Performance.... the watts i missed.

Bought the Intel 730 Series 480 GB (deal at under $250) and the SSD ( I now know) uses 1.3-1.5w at idle and 1.3 - 1.5w under load, without having anything for battery conservation, enterprise class durability with 5-year warranty. With the Sony's original battery and the Slice Battery (VGP-BPSC-24) which doubles normal battery time when portable, 95% of time the Sony is plugged in like a desktop and sits on a fan cooler pad. MY ONLY concern is HEAT. Do not have any desire to put in something which generates too much heat which is not GOOD for any electronics. Most say it WILL work, but not their laptop.

Anyone out there who HAS the Intel 730 Series 480GB SSD in their laptop? Work okay? Battery life differences?

I think we need to settle this discussion OP. I think the simplest, and the answer you do want is, just go get your Apple products. Your loathe, hatred, and anger (been over a year at Sony) is unabated, inclusive of Microsoft's product lines, so I believe you should put this all on Ebay, AS IS, let someone else deal with it, and just clean start with Apple, as you can afford all these very expensive components.

Second to that, to just answer your 'confusion'; when you swap the HDD for SSD that is it, it is the same 'fit' there is no more additional space in that SPOT. Does this model (as is common) have TWO BAYS, most likely, AND that SECOND BAY would NOT contain the same mounting bracket (2 BAYS 1 MOUNTING bracket for ONE drive) and you would have to hunt down the correct one for the second bay if you want TWO storage drives.

As for "no interest in added storage Inside the Sony laptop, preferring to use external HDD for that purpose" is a CRITICAL MISTAKE *IF* your following the NORMAL SSD has OS/Critical Software place all data/games/other on the second drive (HDD) to minimize the impact (unnecessary wearing out the SSD much faster and using up the smaller storage room). The problem with a 'external' HDD is not made for this, especially when Game applications (Steam downloads) are mapped to it, it corrupts the OS/Registry when it becomes unplugged OR if changing USB ports Windows will change the drive letter. Hence a internal drive you do not have such issues. If you were just dumping your pr0n to the external and nothing else, not a big deal.

Your questions reveal you didn't seem to recognize or know WHAT the difference is between a HDD and SSD; that is a HDD is a mechanical drive moving parts that has to 'spin up' platters (like old record players, different speeds caused different sound quality to come out - same with HDD) Just like any mechanical other device (car engine, your lawn mower, etc.) the mechanical movements create heat as a by product, and getting a 'faster' drive (7200RPM vs the normal cheapo 5400RPM you have) would cause more heat issues BUT would be much faster software response time for things (applications ran faster, quicker responses to clicking etc.).

A SSD is (for the quickest comparision) just Memory chips that can store long term then the normal degradation normal RAM chips in your computer normally uses. Now while ALL electrical devices emanate heat as a by product (more electricity used more heat) in comparison to mechanical created heat it is normally on a much lower magnitude. So in actually removing a HDD and putting a SSD DROPS the heat level because your performing the same function (long term storage) with a different way (memory chips).

Additionally, SSD requires (like all memory devices) a steady constant voltage to perform, as compared to a HDD which increases the 'speed' of the spindles and the movement of the head all based on 'use' (sitting idle the drive does very little as compared to the middle of a 64Man BF4 Map) and decreases. So as the drive is 'used' the amount of power draw increases, usually along the same line as the demand is placed on the GPU, another heavy power draw. A SSD being constant and steady no matter how much or less usage then uses much less 'power' in comparison, and thus also is preferred as a 'green device'.

This is how many devices now (Kindle Fire, iPhones, etc.) have a SSD installed for weight, power consumption and HEAT considerations in such small portable devices rather then the MUCH cheaper per GB you get with a HDD (large cost difference).

My suggestion (dunno if you heard otherwise) was based on your initial post (see top of the thread OP) which did NOT say anything about MOVING a Asus OS/Programs/Date to a Sony Laptop. That is a totally DIFFERENT question then "new Sony laptop with Windows 8.0, wanting to downgrade to Windows 7". IF the Asus (as I said) used a 'off the shelf' or Builder's Edition Windows then you can move that to any computer you like, as suggesting, cloning the entire drive and reactivating via Microsoft phone input. As I mentioned, the 'industry standard' is to BULK purchase OEM licensing from Microsoft, which has the caveat, the OS is tied to that make / model computer ONLY, and can't be redistributed with different hardware, to sell the system at the discounted rate as compared to a full 'consumer licensed' off the shelf edition of Windows included with the costs for the hardware itself charged to the customer.

That being said, here is IN YOUR LIFETIME... HDMI to RCA converters at your local Walmart http://www.walmart.com/tp/hdmi-to-rca-converter and for those whome shop online... Amazon http://www.amazon.com/HDMI-RCA-VGA-Cable-1-8m/dp/B002ZUI68G

As some of the kids say "ohhh your so 2000 man"... LOL :)

It would appear that I have offended Tom with my questions and if so, my apologies. I have more than a passing knowledge in mechanical engineering, and thermodynamics going back to Vanderbilt Univ. in 1967 College of Engineering (Chemical); and my not having replaced a drive personally in a laptop does not mean I have NO knowledge of the components. Always good to read a refresher coarse.

In the future will stick to HARD FACTS, without any history, when and if asking a question. Thank you for your time. Dave

Did say cable,, not conversion boxes,, CABLE with RCA plugs at one end ,, with HDMI plug at other end,,, WILL NOT convert digital to analog. Can pick anything apart, or take out of context, or slander what you believe is someones lack of experience; however, nothing is solved.

Provided Sony model number in case someone KNOWS about the drive space, Have not opened it up, Then I'll know. Did check with mfgr and other sites,, verify it had 7mm drive. Last laptop I ever replace drive with, only had ONE SPACE one size drive. Trial and error will get it done. I will check with Intel regarding the 730 Series drive. thanks for your time.
