AMD gave me the basic catalyst driver and i'm confused about how right it is for my setup. can anyone clear this out?

For crossfire it can be done but you might want to check compatibility list on AMD site first to be sure. Also AMD has stop making drivers for HD 4K series for years already so if you're thinking to use such setup with newer games most likely there are no profiles from AMD themselves to make 4800 series crossfire work.
