It's not my internal hard drive, it is a Toshiba portable 2TB drive. It started making clicking noises out of nowhere. I am quite sure that I had never dropped this drive. So anyway, my computer is able to detect and run the drive, and the files I have on it run without any problems. But, I am unable to copy any more files to the drive. The drive just slows to a near-complete stop when I try to copy to the drive, and it even becomes impossible to kill the process. The only way I'm able to get out of the situation is to do the emergency shutdown (holding the power button). Fortunately, I am able to copy data from the drive to my internal drive. I have bought a new portable drive for the transfer, but I haven't opened it yet.

So, before I open the new drive, is there any way to fix this malfunctioning drive by myself?

Drives making new noises never get better, only worse. Copy anything critical off it now.

Typically, the "click" is synonymous of the head of the reader failing. Copy the content you care about off that drive and replace it.

Agreed this is a failing drive about to go to total failure. Get the data off and move on.
