2.5 quad core AMD vs 1.7 dual core Intel, does the Intel really honestly win?

In another thread, where I'm seeking advice on a $600 laptop budget, a person said that the Intel in this case would win, or at least be competitive. I have always known that two companies having a chip at the same (ghz) speed didn't mean they were equally effective, but can the margin be so wide.

I know that 4x 2.5 ghz doesn't really equal 10ghz, nor does 2x 1.7 equal 3.4. That's not how that works, but it just seems like such a vast difference in processing power should mean something.

Can someone help break this down?

I'm looking at the AMD A10-5750M vs Intel Core i5-4210U.

I do also see that they have the same number of threads (4 each), for what that's worth.

How do you plan to use your lap? A10 5750m cpus are quite good indeed, very balanced in terms of cpu and gpu performance. i5 4210u are better at single threaded aplications, slightly lower multi-threaded performance, and veeery low graphics performance, but the i5 consumes less power. If battery duration is a concern the i5 lap will be better for you, if not, then get the amd lap.

Like mlga said, its your usage scenario for this case. In regards to AMD vs Intel, in general intel is more efficient and more powerful but charge more money, amd is vice versa and makes up for the performance difference with more cores.

Web design, Localhost server for testing, server scripting, android app development, photoshop, and Blender 3D rendering is a hobby.

Thanks.

If that were your demand. Get an i7.
You can get an i7 with that price point.

Had a hard time finding one really. I already made a thread on that though, the source of this question.

i5 will be OK then. Not a dual core man, and not AMD.

Of the 2 chips you asked about, the nod goes to the Intel i5-4210U. Unfortunately, that mobile Core i5 is a dual core, while the desktop i5's are all quad core AFAIK. In the mobile space, the i5 adds turboboost to the i3, and an i7 is needed for a true quad core (although the i7-4578U is still a dual core).

Thanks everyone. A bit depressing. Intels aren't that much more expensive, but definitely out of my $600 budget.
