Hi, I made a post last night about putting together a server but I realized I should probably focus on one component to build the server around. So I just wanted some opinion on the Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-1620 v2 and whether if its any good or perhaps a better alternative in the same price range. I plan on using a dual LGA 2011 motherboard to add another or upgrade the processor(s) later.

- The server will host a two different websites that will include blogs and forums which will mostly consist of conversations and articles on projects and varies collaborations. A third website for sharing photographs and videos for current events.

- I also have a group that wants to run a Minecraft server on it with around 25 slots.

- File sharing and storing for local network. Steaming movies to a few TVs.

- And 4 IP cameras recording at 720p 24/7.

Thanks in advance!

Problem is that it's much more difficult to configure a good dual-processor Xeon system than a gaming PC or a workstation. Do you have an idea of what you want to spend? Some things, like the IP cameras might probably be more suitable to a dedicated system. You can buy off-the-shelf solutions for that.

Well I don't know very much about current processors, and even less about the Xeon series. I just wanted to use an LGA 2011 motherboard for upgradability. And I chose the E5-1620 v2 because it is low in price with specs that I think look decent. But I wouldn't really know.

I figured $289.99 + $289.99 for two of this processor, a somewhere around $300 on a decent motherboard that can run more memory than I need.

All I want to know right now is whether if the E5-1620 v2 is good for me. I have doubts because of its price compared to all the other processors in the E5 series.

You can install a single E5-1620 in a system; Xeon E5-2600 series processors are required for dual socket.
