I have a 4/cg G,264 Hardware Codec version 1.0 network DVR from several years ago, but the software is so ridiculously antiquated, I gave up on using it. Is there any way to install an updated operating software? I can't seem to find an answer online. Thanks very much.

If it's network, just connect it to your router. It should have a web API and won't require any software?

If you have windows 8 Pro, you can install Client Hyper V and just create a Windows XP Virtual Machine. You can run the software and manage it from there. You can use Oracle Virtual Box if you don't have Hyper V. Just build a Windows XP machine, you don't even need to register it or anything, it will only run 1 piece of software.

MY OS is Vista, but we do have a lose PC (either Vista or XP). I had it connected to a monitor only previously and the program to view the recorded video is antique--very cumbersome. So if I connect it to a router, how do I manage the recorded images (FF, rewind, erase, save, etc.)? Hyper V is the operating system to install on the unused PC. I guess I don't understand the technology...the DVR has some kind of clunky software to view the video and that's the part I'm confused about. I thought I'd need something installed (other than the Hyper V?) Appreciate any other advise. Thanks Barb

Hyper V is a virtualization technology. It allows you install an operating system within an operating system.

If it's network based, it should assign itself an IP when you connect it to the router. You can see the assigned IP's in your routers settings. Type the IP address in your web browser and see if that brings anything up.
