I just built this computer last night, and it won't boot! I press the button and it lights up & fans turn on, but after 1 second it turns back off.

I had a look on the motherboard's (Asrock Z97 Extreme6) website & it says for my particular processor (4790K) it needs BIOS version 1.30 to run it (http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z97%20Extreme6/?cat=CPU).

But I called the place I bought the gear from, and the guy seemed sure that it should run anyway as that motherboard is built to work with those processors and that I should look at something else as the cause of the problem. I seem to think otherwise after looking at that list, which clearly says for 4790K it needs v1.30 BIOS.

Here's the build:

Intel Core i7-4790K Devil's Canyon 4.0GHz Socket 1150
Noctua NH-U12S 120mm Multi Socket CPU Cooler
G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) F3-1866C10D-16GAB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM 1866
Samsung 840 Pro Series 256GB SSD
Asrock Z97 Extreme6 4xDD3 ATX Motherboard
WD 2TB 3.5 Inch Caviar Black Internal Hard
Pioneer BDC-207DBK Internal Blu-Ray Combo
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 750 OC 1GB
Seasonic Platinum Series 520W Fanless Power Supply

Unfortunately it isn't easy for me to get my hands on a spare socket 1150 processor, so my option would be to bring the build to the store (which would be tricky as well, and I'm sure they will charge me). Before I do that, I want to ensure that it truly is/is not the problem.

What do you guys think?

The biggest problem I have seen with Asrock motherboards is ram compatibility. Double check Asrocks website to make sure your ram is compatible with your motherboard.

The ASRock website doesn't have it, but the RAM page does:

So from that, I'm assuming it isn't the RAM

I have a similar build - things to check:
1) 24-pin power to mobo
2) 4/8 pin power to mobo (CPU power)
3) CPU fan plugged in
4) GPU power plugged in (6/8 pin)
5) RAM seated in 1/3 or 2/4.

Things to be careful of: DO NOT use the jumper to reset CMOS with the power connected to PSU (I bricked a mobo - you can get a replacement BIOS chip from ASROCK, but it takes 2-3 weeks). Always make sure to unplug the power prior to doing any changes to the mobo (reseating RAM, CPU, etc).

Ok, I will have a look at these things tonight, thanks!

I'm still confused about the BIOS stuff though. Can anybody advise on that?

I had the same issue when I was building mine. Same processor and same board. Seems that my 8 pin power connector at the top was loose.
Popped that sucker in all the way and it came on perfectly.
My Bios was actually on 1.20 btw so yea it should run fine with the processor.
