So I was playing SC2 today, and after a bit of gaming my screen started getting black blocks, lines and was stuttering really bad. Every time I reopen a game in sc2, it happens again.

I recently overclocked my cpu but I had this overclock with a lesser motherboard and I did stability tests, and every other application works fine.

I am leanin towards bad gcard, but hoping its not because I am upgrading my cpu soon anyway. Just wanted your alls opinion. I will take down the overclock on the cpu to see if the is the problem but hopin someone can point me in the right dirrection.

system specs:
CPU: athlon ii x4 640 @ 3.67ghz
MOBO: gigabyte ga970-udp3
GPU: radeon hd 7970 xfx
psu: corsair cx600m
RAM: 8gb 1333

thanks

already done prime95 on the cpu. Ill download furmark to test the gpu.

What is your CPU, GPU, MOBO and PSU?

Edited:

If you did not OC your GPU then you have a bad CPU OC.

after running furmark my gpu got to 90 degrees in about a minute. I will run prime95 to test the cpu again but at the very least I need to adress the cooling issue on my gpu!

Agreed, those temps are a little high. I know some graphics cards are designed to run that hot but it is a little high for my taste. I think your problem is in your graphics card. How comfortable are you with removing the heat sink an reapplying thermal paste.

I have 7970 and goes 68C when stressing on unengine valley.
I agree on the above comment to reapply thermal paste.

Search in youtube for guides.

I am fine with reapplying thermal paste. Wouldn't be the first time I did that to a gpu. I am just surprised because starcraft isnt supposed to be all that taxing on a gpu (my old 9800 gtx+ ran it maxed out). Will do and will update as things progress.

Starcraft is a bread for 7970. You should be getting the best for your cards. Go for it. :)

Good luck.

Looks like it was my overclock. prime95 shows stable, but I played a round of sc2 today and it glitched, so I turned off my overclock and sc2 runs just fine now. I still need to adress my gpu temp issue, but it never got over 69c when playing sc2 so for now its alright. good thing I checked the overclock before pulling apart my gpu.

Thanks for the help folks!

I had a feeling it was the overclock. I don't also think the power supply is really great.

Well I know when you overclock via base frequency it overclocks the RAM, FSB and hypertransport, so I underclocked those, but I have also heard that it overclocks the PCIE, which could account for my overheating gpu as well as stability. Is there any way to find out what the stock frequency for the PCIE is so I know what to set it at in my bios when overclocking in the future? Assuming that it does in fact get overclocked with the base frequency....

You`re making it complicated. Solve your problem first and then take the next step.

I did solve my problem. I turned off my overclock. I still want an overclock though and not at the expense of a stable system.

The CX model is not designed for mid to upper gaming computers. though the specs look fine, the quality can be lacking. I too suspect your PSU. The added juice from the OC could have put you over the limit of the PSU.

Any suggestions on a good psu then? I intend to overclock and eventually add another hd 7970, so it would have to be something that can handle dual gpu (I am guessing 750+w). My budget would be around 100 dollars.

btw I do live near a microcenter if that makes it easier.

The 7970 is a real power hog. I am not sure you are going to be able to do it without a 1000 watt power supply and that is not going to happen on a $100 budget. If you were not over clocking then it would be another story.

You will be fine with a little room to spare with the 850watt link. Two 7970's need 380 -440 watts (min-max).

One thing about PSUs: Never skimp on them, a good one will last you several builds. It will almost pay for itself over time.

Yea. When I started this build I didnt have any intentions of overclocking and was running a 7770. For what I had the 600 was fine, but ur right, overclocking needs much more headroom.

Yes you can overclock with your current PSU. I`m running with 620W bronze with 7970. Both my CPU and GPU were OCed.

So start your OC by raising your coreclock let`s say from 3.5Ghz to 3.6Ghz and test for stability, if it is not stable increase your voltage (e.g. 0.9888 to 1.000) slowly but surely and then again test for stability. You don`t rush things in overclocking.

Good luck :)

I did all the stability tests with the overclock. I am getting a new cpu this week anyway so that overclock is going to be pointless. I will try to overclock with the new cpu, run the stability test and then run a graphical test to make sure it isnt drawing too much power or messing with my GPU. I will eventyually need a new psu for when I get the second hd 7970, but for now I will see what I can do with what I have.

Haha, I agree with your last statement. Try experimenting in your current system so that when your new CPU and GPU and PSU arrive you have all the knowledge needed. :)

Sounds like a good plan. Yes I would defiantly upgrade your PSU if you are planning on installing a second GPU.
