I only ask because I have read on this forum that the 1155 socket cpus are superior to the 1150 ones. Just about all the gaming builds, both high end and budget seem to go with the 4670k though. Is there a similar (or cheaper) 1155 cpu that will perform as well or better?

1155 socket is replaced by 1150. 1155 had Z77 mobos and i5 3570k

1150 had i5 4670k and now has i5 4690k. Each newer i5 is stronger than the last.

You might consider an i7. You will get hyperthreading with an i7. I would go with a 3770K because it will not break the bank and good for games because games usually use more of the GPU than a CPU and it is better to save money on your CPU and put it into your graphics card.

Stick to 1150 and get the 4690k, best gaming CPU right now unless you step up to an i7 which is unnecessary

For gaming only? The best that you can get for a 1155 board is a 3570k, if you already have a 1155 mobo then stick to 1155 cpus, there is no much difference in performance between them (not enough to justify buying another mobo), but if you dont have any motherboard, then go for 1150, they're actually have similar prices.
