I've seagate Freeagent Go 500GB hard disk
It worked really well all these years so much that I started realying on it by removing another duplicate data as sync would be a problem.

Recently it started giving scan error. I asked to scan and it used to come out well. so I started ignoring it. (There is an option continue without scanning)

Then it stopped access to some folders/file, so I allowed the scan and it would hang at the USN entries

Later I did the chkdsk also which does exact same thing only through DOS CMD. Here it stopped in the index entries itself

Yesterday, I tried to recover as much data as I could thinking it would crash and it did. After a while, it stopped recognizing the drive.

I still have some data to be recovered and it is not getting detected at all. Seatools also does not detect the drive.

I tried connecting to all USB Ports / different laptop, even my smartTV but its not getting detected. It does light up with the white LED design pattern. It used to show up with Dim and bright pattern, maybe some indication, The drive still rotates once connected. In one of the laptop, It even makes a sound of device connected but does not detect/add any drivers, etc

It used to work perfectly alright on the same laptop.

I also eliminated cord / port issue by changing the same.

What can I do next?

Thanks for reading through long message

7 years before failure for an external hard drive is par for the course, indeed it's better than any I've owned (and I've tried all the brands out there).

You've reached the stage where only a data recovery service can help you and that's very expensive, which is why you should always keep your data backed up at least twice.

Thanks for you response.

Is 7 years really an old age for drive?

In fact this was most pampered drive. It was never dropped in these last 7 years. Always stored in dust free case when not in operation etc

My laptop drive is still working fine. In fact i copied the data to this drive being without any options for such huge data.

But i still feel that it can get to work. I saw some tips on opening it n adding as a sata drive.

1. I need to order another backupdrive which one in your experience is reliable?

2. What else can be done for data recovery than going through the service. Its all personal data so no business backing for the high cost :)
