Issue with freezing that doesn't make sense

Hello!! So I've been trying to figure out exactly what my problem is, maybe I can get some better answers from the community, because I've run out of things to try.

On a few games in my Steam library, when I attempt to run them, they work fine, up until a certain point in each game. Usually involving some kind of combat, or something along those lines. The crashes are odd, however, the games literally freeze up, but they do not close. I've tried waiting in the assumption that perhaps this is some kind of minor problem, but it's not. In order for me to close the games at this point, I must CTRL+ALT+DELETE, and close the program that way...only the program doesn't actually close. It attempts to, but only disappears from my screen, removing my cursor as if it was in-game, but I'm sitting on my desktop. Occasionally I find a way to "minimize" this program/game/issue, and get my cursor back, but I cannot play any Steam games, and an attempt to try and close steam and relaunch changes nothing, as Steam still thinks I'm in-game. The onyl thing that works for sure is restarting the computer and not launching the game

Games I know it affects:

-Mortal Kombat 9 (freezes at random intervals during a fight)

-Fallout New Vegas (Freezes randomly as I go to shoot a gun, unknown if other non-ranged weapons affect this)

-Fallout 3 (Freezes randomly as I go to shoot a gun, unknown if other non-ranged weapons affect this)

-State Of Decay (Freezes as gameplay starts)

-Red Faction: Guerilla (Freezes as gameplay starts)

-Red Faction: Armageddon (Freezes as gameplay starts)

I've been able to predict some games that would likely be affected, usually the higher-end graphics-wise games that are generally harder on computers. Problem is, not only do I attempt to adjust the graphics settings to lowest, but I've got a high enough card (nVidia GeForce GTX 770) That should be more than capable of running these games. I've also attempted to contact nVidia and Steam, but neither can come up with any kind of explanation to the issue. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

Yeah, I appreciate it, heh. I tried looking into it but it seems they are all up to date. When I had taken it in, they said it might be the same problem. I'm starting to think it's a hardware compatibility issue. Oddly enough, I've been playing Skyrim and it works fine, yet Fallout NV and 3 don't. Doesnt make sense to me.

I'm at work at the moment, so unfortunately no. I CAN tell you what I remember, however. Which unfortunately isn't much, I've got a nVidia 770 GTX, Intel Core i5, 8 gigs of RAM and i'm running windows 7. I dont know if that info'll help but I'll try to look into more tonight
