hi,
I am currently on a budget and I plan to upgrade my GPU... My plan was to get a SAPPHIRE DUAL-X R9 280 (no x). But I was faced with a dilemma... I currently have a corsair CX500.

// Note on that, the psu is NOT the v1 or v2 version it is the current gen...

I confirmed all info above corresponds with the label on the PSU itself.
it has +12V@38A //

The 280 requires a 500w PSU.
Will this work?

and if not can anyone recommend a PSU under $80?

I've looked at:

XFX TS 550W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817207013&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

SeaSonic S12II 620W: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151096

Which is better?

my current specs:-
i7 4790k
asus z97 p
G.SKILL Sniper 12GB (2 x 4GB) (2 x 2GB)
wd caviar blue 500 Gb
Sandisk ultra plus 120 GB SSD
asus optical drive.
Corsair r300 case
(current gpu) msi ghz ed. HD 7770
(wanted gpu) Sapphire dual-x r9 280 :

Well You're in no rush to replace the PSU just don't overclock anything , The CX series aren't the best in the world yet not the worst . Your PSU should light up the GPU for a month or two till you have the money for a new PSU.

For a New PSU I'd recommend taking a look at this ( You don't need 650W but its good for future upgrades ) : http://pcpartpicker.com/part/rosewill-power-supply-capstone650m

really so it should work without the new psu? as of now I mean? The r9 280 won't be OC'ed as well as the 4790k(no OC'ing i mean.) But after a few months invest in a new PSU?

you will be fine for a year if you really want, you could likely even oc there isn't a lot of wattage being pulled by that system.

180 draw from the card 220 when oc'd to 1150 mhz

109 @ default clocks underload load from the cpu. Add another 100 watts or more depending on the oc.

Perhaps just oc the video card if anything on that psu. Going to town on both will be really pushing the limit for that psu,

it may be 500 watts but that is peak power not a an expected full time load.

Personally I would't have any issue with that psu and going for broke but I won't advise others to do so as it's not my equipment
