Solution
1000W is actually recommended for R9 290 CrossFire. It's a bit overkill, but the extra power becomes useful when you start overclocking.

Since you're going to be running 2 GPU's then 1000w is fine.

It's more about the quality though. I have a XFX XTR 750 and it is 80 Plus Gold and on the XFX website it says you can run 3 GPU's with it.

It is a great PSU but I wouldn't run more then 2, 290's. It has 3 8+8 PCI-E cables. And it would run 3 290's but I'm not sure for how long. You never want to stress you're PSU.

But anyway, I think a good 1000w PSU would be more then enough. As long as it's a good and tested PSU with good reviews.

You won't hear enough praise about the Eva 1000g2 from me. I use it in my own system, and in my next system upgrade I will be using it again. It's a beast and the extra headroom allows for some solid overclocking. evga is the brand I recommend to all of my customers when building a pc.

my antech 750w high current gamer runs my i5-4690 & 2x r9 290's.

(I am spamming the forums with this answer as I researched with no luck - heaps of people saying 1kw min psu required... rolled the dice and its fine)

specs
my system:
i5-4690 w/ a/m cooler
msi z97m-g43
antech 750w high current gamer
msi r9 290 twin forzer OC (+25mv/950core/1300ram)
sapphire r9 290 reference (+25mv/950core/1300ram)
1 x ssd, 2 x hdd, 3 x case fans, every usb port in use, 1x4k screen, 2x1080p screens.

getting 18,800 gpu score in firemark - mixed results in games, crossfire works... sometimes... (no fault of the builds, simply AMD drivers / poor game support)

Based on my research a 750w PSU is fine, however overclocking beyond 1ghz~ on air cooling should be avoided - the r9 290 power draw significantly increases with clock/voltage - switching to water cooling seems to reduce overall draw by 30-50 watts per card.

its worth noting that the antech can provide 740watts over the 12v rails and can deliver up to 40amps per 12v rail (provided its less than 740watts total across both (i.e 30amps simultaneously)) and uses one rail per video card.
