I'll be replacing my AsRock 960GM-GS3 with a new Gigabyte 970A-DS3P shortly. However, I have a 64-bit Win 8 OEM. I've read a few threads that suggest I need to ring up a toll free number once I've installed my new board for activation.

Is it suggested I make a backup of my hard drive before installing my new mobo?

Solution
Yes, definitely make a backup, if only to make sure your personal files are saved.

As for Windows, it doesn't matter whether it's 32- or 64-bit, or even Windows 8 vs. Windows 7. Any major hardware change, including MB change, is seen as a "new" PC by the software. My last MB swap, I was replacing a damaged version 1.0 with a newer 4.0: same model, same manufacturer. But the OS on the hard drive didn't "recognize" the MB, so I had to use a second hard drive, reinstall from scratch, & then copy my files back over.

You will have to call a toll-free number, because the system will recognize that you're reusing an existing serial number. Just follow the automated prompts, & you'll be fine.
