I recently bought and installed a Crucial M500 240 GB SSD into my computer and put a fresh install of Win 7 on it. Before this purchase my startup time was around 45-55 seconds, and I was told I would have crazy fast boot times with this thing. What I got was slightly underwhelming, with only a moderate decrease in boot time down to 25-30 seconds. I was slightly surprised as this didn't necessarily knock me off my feet, although it was noticeably faster so I decided to leave it alone. Just a while ago I came across some information that the majority of people who install and boot from their SSDs get tremendous decreases, down to 5-6 seconds. At this point I knew something was wrong, so I came here to ask about what step I may have missed while configuring it.

I have already switched my drive mode to ACHI, moved my pagefile to an external HDD, and enabled fastboot. My current performance stands as it is.

SSD only improves loading windows during boot up. Anything before that is down to your motherboard and BIOS.
See if you have or Ultra fast boot mode in UEFI.

I actually do have Ultra Fast boot enabled, not fast boot. I didn't think I needed to mention that.

Moving your pagefile to a HDD will slow your boot because Windows will have to query that drive during boot.

What do you mean, what's in my startup? Do you mean what programs start when I log on?

These timings are from power button to logon screen by the way, so no programs will have started.

Also I will move my pagefile and see if that makes a difference.

The 5 - 6 second boot times are probably timed from a different start point, not from power button. The overhead of BIOS and things like that won't change because of an SSD. You need to start your timing after your computer says "Booting from Hard Drive...". If you have a CD listed in the boot sequence before your hard drive it has to go query that device before deciding to boot from the hard drive. You may be getting 5 second boot times IF you start timing when the computer really starts booting Windows.

Moving the pagefile did give a noticeable speed increase. And maybe you're right kanewolf, i'm probably expecting too much. It really is closer to 5 or so seconds if you count from the "starting windows" dialogue.

Glad to see that moving the PF helped.

Please see the bold text above. I'm not sure if what you say is true. Have you checked which programs get loaded at start-up?

Go to Start>Run>msconfig>Enter and you can see your start up programs under the "Startup" tab. Check each entry and see exactly what is loading and from which drive. If you get stumped by an obscure entry, just Google the program and find out what it does.

You'd be surprised at some of the crap that gets loaded into your Windows start-up without your permission or knowledge!

I thought the same thing, this does not feel faster. Then I went onto a computer that is not using an ssd and realized wow the one without the ssd is much slower at opening programs and I have to wait 5 seconds after windows opens just to open the internet. I put programs on my SSD as well and they load much faster as well.

Overall the difference is not noticeable until you go back to using a non ssd. Then you will be like wow.
