so here we are,
i have a Z87 Extreme 4, to install an i7 4790K i need to update my BIOS right?

just wondering, because i see a lot of new cheap build for HR processor, they usually go for H81/B85/H87 because its cheaper than the H97 motherboard, can we update the BIOS to support HR processor without processor in the socket? like InstantFlash in ASRock or MFlash in MSI or USB BIOS Flashback in ASUS...

Solution
As long you can post and enter the BIOS, you can update the BIOS regardless if you installed an OS or not.
You need to download the BIOS file into a USB and plug that into the USB ports.
Use one of the Flash utility on the motherboard to update the BIOS.
The updating of the BIOS without a cpu is not just software, you need the hardware like a pre-programed button to have these features. I believe it is exclusive for certain ASUS motherboards only.
if you want this, you need to get an ASUS motherboard that has this feature built in.

if you bought a Z87 Extreme 4 recently, it should have the latest BIOS so your i7 4970k will work. If it doesn't then you need a Haswell cpu then.

BIOS updates can only be done with a functioning CPU running in the system. The only other way to update a BIOS without the system running is with a CPU emulation station or an EEPROM burning station with the chip in the station. As to whether this board support that CPU, you would have the go to the Mfg. web site.

ok, ill change the question, with the HR processor in the motherboard, can the motherboard go to POST - UEFI and update the BIOS?
