what psu do you have as that will play a part in the choosing of the best video card..

The processor will prove a bottleneck to any card higher than 270X or on a higher side, 760. So my best bet would be to go with GTX 750 Ti (Asus/MSI/Gigabyte/EVGA), as you've not mentioned your PSU, which determines how much load you can put on the system wattage wise.
A wiser choice is to wait for a week and see what the 900 series is bringing for us :)

Do you plan to upgrade CPU anytime soon (like in a year or so)? What's your budget for GPU? I'd get 750 Ti/ 270X if you don't plan on upgrading, or 280X if you plan to move to newer tech :)

With my system being so dated, would I even notice a performance improvement by upgrading my GPU?

It'll be a nice upgrade, no swashbucking FPS increase but a 15-20 FPS increase is good enough IMO.

looking at that chart your card should still do fine except for the older dx 10 part of it

Would it be worth picking up another 4870 and crossfire them?

If your system (MoBo) supports that, then yes, its at par with GTX 580 which's better than GTX 750 Ti or about the same as 270X, while costing less. But the only drawback is no DX11 support. I'd go with newer tech and 270X is better as its a single GPU, ie, less driver and heat issues.

a new up to date card is nice for the new stuff on them over your card but with your older build there may be a point in the cards power that may be overkill on it like said above the r9 270 may be the max card to go on it ??
