Would I gain any advantage with a receiver?

Hey,
A family member has a spare receiver (I don't know the exact model, only that it's a JVC, and he is claiming it's pretty good). My current setup is a normal sound card (from my mobo), pretty basic speakers (Microlab Solo 6c). Should I even bother to get it from him?
Thanks for the help!

I know next to nothing about sound, what's the difference between the 2 speakers? What does a receiver actually do?
Thanks for the help :)

Receiver - A completely standalone device, used to accept audio signals from a tape, phono, radio, whatever...and output that to a set of regular home speakers.

Basically, a regular home audio system.

Can you use it with a PC? Sure. But if you have a reasonably good set of PC speakers, absolutely not necessary.
