Ok, so i've been out of the video card loop for, well, quite a while now.

I want to upgrade my HP Workstation z400's gpu, and I know what I'm looking for (sort of), but I'm completely confused by the way video cards are rated and priced these days.

What I want --> Preferably, a Nvidia 1gb video card with DVI output. ATI is fine, but, w/e.

What I see --> First 20 results for said specs have 20 different manufacturers (PNY, ZOTAC, EVGA, Dell, HP, Sapphire, etc). All of them have slightly different specs (the gDDR3 < gDDR5 I get, but the rest is confusing for me) and the prices have $200 differences.

I like the GTX460 1GB, so, I don't know if that would help in explaining what I should be looking for :p

The gtx 460 is waaayyy outdated. Go with something like a gtx 750 ti if you are willing to spend around $150 for a really good up to date graphics card

first, what games and what resolution will you be gaming at? also you need to make sure your power supply can handle the extra gpu horsepower.

Are you gaming, or do you just need a decent video card for a desktop?

Nearly all cards today are based on chips made by Nvidia or AMD. They then license companies to build the card using their chipset. Each company has the option of what type and how much memory, type of cooling, and other variations to appeal to different peoples budgets and needs. @Col Da Red -> The GTX 750 would be great, but the PSU is an HP custom and can't be upgraded from the 475w (and the 750 requires min. 500w), so....crap

@sportsfanboy -> Most games will be at 1680x1050 *59 refresh and the video output will be DVI (monitor that came with it). I'm just looking for Skyrim to play at highest settings without lag or screen tear (and newer games as I get them)

@jitpublisher -> Thanks for the link. I read the article and I *think* this would be my best option http://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Profile-Graphics-02G...

Also, thanks for the help guys. It's a little weird for me to be having this much trouble finding a video card :p

this card is good get this:
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/ite...
it requires no 8 pin and 475 watts is plenty. The pci slot only pumps out 75 watts and its not like your running huge power hungry things anyways

I agree for 1680 resolution, the 750 ti is a good match, also great for lower power psu's
