Hello Everyone,

I am looking into building a NAS and am looking to have a raid 6 or RaidZ2 setup. I know I would need a Raid Controller card to make that possible but I can not seem to find any recommendations for a good quality one. If you all could advise me on what i should look for. I know the major brands out there are LSI and Adaptec but i just dont know what kind of, nor quality of cards I should be examining. I want to ensure compatibility as well. I am using server grade components and plan on using FreeNAS. I am willing to spend what is necessary on a proper Controller card but would prefer to keep it as inexpensive as possible . My budget for the Controller card is max $900 US but would much prefer something much cheaper.

If you use RAID 6, you need a RAID card. I would recommend Adaptec 7805 or 8805 in the kit form (including the 1 SAS to 4 SATA connector cables x 2 as it is cheaper than buying the cables separately).

If you use raidz you do *NOT* want a RAID card, but just an HBA (host bus adapter). The IBM M1015 is a great choice, as it is an LSI card that is a cheaper when you get it IBM branded and it is probably the most used card for 8 drive raidz card out there since it is cheap and compatible with FreeNAS.

I would read the whole 4 part series, but HERE is the best guide (part 4) to using this card and flashing it to LSI9211-IT mode that is best in FreeNAS arrays.

Also, be careful when ordering the two SFF-8087 to 4 SATA breakout...

Also, be careful when ordering the two SFF-8087 to 4 SATA breakout cables that you will need so that you get the correct ones.

And the good news is that brand new from Amazon you are looking at under $300 plus the two cables.
