hi there,
long time reader, first time poster...love this forum, its amazing what you can learn..and although ive been learning alot over the last few week im still not quite sure how to best configure my current setup.for max render performance of multiple dslr streams using cs6 software with win7 ultimate

ive just purchased a 2nd hand dell t7500 with
dual quad core processors (2 x e5520 xeon 2.27ghz quads)
24gb ram
nvidia quadro fx 3800, (although this keeps crashing out my pc, i tried it in another system, same issue, so i have changed it for an old geforce 9800gt 512mb card for now..perhaps its over heating...ill look further into that!!)

the mother board comes with Integrated LSI 1068e SAS/SATA 3.0Gb/s controller that supports host based RAID 0 or 1

4 sata/sas ports...(hdd0,hdd1,hdd2,hdd3)..sas controller
3 sata/ssd/dvd ports...(sata0,sata1,sata2)...sata controller
2x sas 146gb 1500rpm dell enterprise hard drives

i already own
1x500gb 7200 16mb cache 3gbs seagate sata hd
1x750gb 7200 32mb cache 3gbs seagate sata hd
and yesterday i finally delved into the ssd world and bought a 120gb samsung 840evo ssd drive (6gbs..compatible with 3gbs)

after alot of research i had planned to set up as so..

config 1
d\..dvd...(sata0)
c\..ssd...os/programs (sata1)
e\..2xsas 146gb...raid0 for dslr files/project files (hdd0,hdd1)
f\..750gb sata 32mb cache...for previews/static pagefile/media cache/scratch (hdd2)
g\..500gb sata 16mb cache...for exports/backups (hdd3)

i also have about 20 sata hdds of various sizes so im not worried about using this machine to backup my work..i just need it to be a power house!!

this machine is to be optimized for video editing/color correction/fx/rendering...nothing else

so i tried this setup and am happy with the results.... but was expecting a bit more out of the machine..so i continued researching and it seems a lot of people feel that the only benefit to using ssd drives as your os drive is the initial boot/load up times but that it dosn't really give much performance boost after that and also after setting up the ssd theres only about 100gb left..not really enough for os\progs but enough to hold a project for its duration...then empty it for the next project...which leads me to this new config

config 2...(same sata/sas ports)
d\..dvd...
c\..2xsas raid 0 for os/progs
e\..1xssd dslr files/project files
f\..750gb sata 32mb cache...for previews/static pagefile/media cache/scratch
g\..500gb sata 16mb cache...for exports/backups

does this second option seem optimized or have i slowed down my data flow somehow?

possible other options...

500gbsata for cdrive
2xsas raid 0 dslr files
1xssd scratch/cache
750gb renders..
ahhh...the mind boggles..too many options..haha

so id like to get into the nitty gritty of why each drive should do the job it has to (read/write)...how does the hard drive cache affect its performance in these scenarios...(mainly thinking about the 75gb 32cache vs 500gb 16cache)

any thoughts on my setup would be very appreciated
thanks

also after i created the raid0 i partitioned 200gb of the sas hard drive to allow for the c\drive to be on the outside of the platter on the sas drives...ill use the extra 75gb partion to store random non important files...is this the right idea??

i keep wondering if i could be using the sas drives better...maybe no raid0 and then use one as os/progs drive and one as scratch drive...ssd for dslr/project files and the 750gb32mb cache drive as render drive..or should the 750gb 32mb cache drive be the scratch drive????
also..would i gain much if i got a 6gbs sata pci card for the ssd drive...or am i restricted to my 3gbs onboard raid controller??
hmmm...
and ultimately..should i just fork out for a few more ssds and the 6gbs sata card altogether..will that be a noticable performance boost??
thanks again...

also any thoughts on the possible cluster sizes to format each drive
c\..whatever win7 formats as.....
dslr drive..64kb
cache drive..????
render drive???...maybe 64k too as ill be throwing big chunks down
thanks...
