I am currently playing with Windows Server 2012 R2. I have a question on network setup.

Current set up (don't make fun of the DSL- only connection avail at loc)
" alt="" class="imgLz frmImg " />

What I am trying to achieve

1.Remote desktop connections.
2. VPN connections.

Should my router be set up for pass through mode and the server handle the Firewall?

Should the server handle the DCHP task instead of the router?

Can my router be the domain for a server?

I have been able to VPN to the server only when I am on my network. I am sure its the firewall on the router keeping outside connections from working.

I have a few suggestions to "keep it simple" (otherwise, I have to write a book.....LOL).

First, make the router the DHCP server - if you are going to create a domain (you must have Windows Vista/7/8 Pro) to connect PC's to, you will need to set the primary DNS on the devices to the server's IP address. If you don't have Pro versions of the software - you don't have to setup DNS on the server.

Next - create a fixed IP address for the server (you will need that for DNS if you set it up - and servers should always be fixed IP's).

There are two methods where you can remote desktop into the network:
1) Fixed IP - your ISP needs to provide you with a fixed IP for the router, and you can setup routing for RDP connections (this can be costly, and difficult to setup).
2) Use LogMeIn Hamachi - you can setup a free 5 computer "VPN" (it is $29 for 32 computers per year), and it is very easy to setup. Just install, turn it on, and connect via RDP.

I use the paid version of Hamachi (one license for work, and a second for personal), and it saves so much time configuring everything. You can't join the VPN unless you have the link and the admin approves you. You can configure passwords to connect if you want. It is secure and easy.....

If your ASUS runs or can run DD-WRT, you could use it as a simple VPN endpoint and the stuff behind it wouldn't be involved.

If all you need it for is accessing it remotely for files, I'm assuming, just set up VPN.
