So I an replacing my current motherboard and CPU with a z87 Killer from asrock and a intel core i7-4700k CPU. I am wondering if I will have to re install windows 8?, and how would I go about re installing it? Would I have to buy it again or what would I have to do to re activate it, would my old CD key I used to first activate it on my current motherboard work? It did not come with a CD by the way. Just a product key on a sticker on the side of my PC. If someone could help me out it would be much appreciated. This is my first time swapping my motherboard/CPU

If your PC was an OEM (pre-built), the HDD/SSD that was/is C: drive may contain a recovery partition in place of a disk. But with a change of MB, you will have to reinstall the OS. Can you contact the place you bought the original PC from and ask if they will sell your the Win8 installation disk? Since you have the ptoduct key, you won't have to buy the OS again.

Or see if this fits your situation: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-pr...

Yeah I bought it from Ibuypower pre built. So how would I go about installing windows once I have the new motherboard and CPU installed?

Try a sysprep of the OS.

To do this, go to C:\Windows\System32\Sysprep\sysprep.exe, check 'generalize', select 'OOBE' on drop down menu, and 'Shut down'.

When your new MB & CPU boots off of your old HDD, you'll get the 'out of box experience' screen, asking you to create new user account. Just call it anything and after that's done, you can log off and switch to your main user account.

Once you're logged in with your main account, you can safely proceed with deleting the newly made account in Control Panel > User Accounts applet

Sysprep basicly gets rid of all platform specific data such as drivers and configuration files.

EDIT:
You will have to load the new board drivers afterwards. The above is for win7 but I am sure it will work with win8 too.

Can try, I've had MS simply provide a new reactivation code on a number of occasions

So I tried the sysprep and it says "Sysprep was not able to validate your windows installation. Review the log file %WINDIR%\system32\sysprep\Panther/setupact.log for details. After resolving the issue, use Sysprep to validate your installation again

Looks like you will have to install windows again and try to validate it again through microsoft like Tradesman1 said. It's a shame because sysprep works pretty good with win7.
