I am building a computer soon. I don't know if I should get 7 or 8.1. I will be playing games on it. What should I choose?

It depends on what you like. Win 8.1 is not that different from 7 as it can hide the tiles so it will perform like 7. I personally don't like 8.1 as I had an issue with it and I reverted back to 8. I personally would continue with 7 as it will work just as 8.1 and it is cheaper.
Both are excellent operating systems....I have both on my desktop computers (one is 8.1 Pro, the other 7 Pro) and each has it's good points. With Windows 8.1 - the one thing I would recommend is purchasing Start8 ($4.99).

The only issues you may encounter that are "problematic" is some hardware/software on the market do not have drivers or are not supported under the newer operating systems.....I have a "graveyard" of printers that have not had drivers for Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and now Windows 8......if you have older devices - check to see if there are drivers available.

Yea ronintexas is on the money, not biased at all and valid points.

If starting completely new late in the game go Windows8.1. More efficient handling of system resources and overall better performance. Only negative is as stated above with older devices not properly supported from lack of updated drivers. Laziness really.

Also DirectX 11.1 onwards (ie DirectX12 so on) will only being supported from Win8.

I just built a PC last month and I chose Windows 8.1 You can install the OEM version on more than one machine (finally), and it offers fuller support of DirectX 11, and a few other things I've forgotten about. On balance the benefits of 8.1 surpasses those of 7 IMO.

I'd really like to see some links to any tomshardware articles on this subject. I'm in the same situation as the original poster, and I think I'm going to continue using 7 for a year or so until 8.1 drops in price. It will take a short while for game devs to really utilize Direct X11.2 in a way that makes the decision between 7 and 8.1 an obvious one. Without question it will be in every gamers interest to upgrade their operating system; as for the time being, Win 7 still has plenty of life in it.

If you have Windows 7 - the upgrade to Windows 8 isn't much of an upgrade for the cost (about $100). However, the choice in operating systems at build time - they are both approximately the same amount of money - I would go with Windows 8. I still run both....And there is the old statement, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE - DON'T FIX IT."

As for the price drop - I seriously doubt Microsoft drops either in price......
