Hello, all. I recently bought a RADEON R9 270x to put into my aging PC. The GPU was the weakest link, so I figured I should upgrade there first. Installed it, and I got nothing. The fans turned on, but nothing else. So, the most common suggestion was that my PSU was too weak.

Today, I installed a Zalman 600W PSU, and tested it with my original GPU. Everything was fine, so I put in the R9 again. Nothing but fans again. After more searching, I determined that my BIOS was too old to handle the newer GPU. Others solved their R9 problem with an update, so I tried it. Oops.

Everything seems to be working, except that Windows flashes an error message and restarts. I can go into the BIOS utility, and Windows autorepair menu, but Windows can't seem to find the error. This MoBo will be next on the upgrade list, but that does me no more good than this gigantic RADEON paperweight I have in the meantime.

Having a working computer is better than a fancy GPU, so how can I fix this BIOS problem? I'll worry about the R9 later.

Just after POST completes, before the windows logo appears, press the F8 key repeatedly to bring up the Advanced Boot Options Menu. Then select "Disable Automatic Restart on System Failure". Now when it crashes it will stop on your error message. Please write it down and post it here.
Thanks.

"Your PC ran into an issue and needs to restart. We're just collecting info, and then we'll restart for you."

Not as useful as I would hope. :-\

Will it boot up in safe mode?
Do you have Rapid start on the motherbd? If so disable it.

Well, safe mode didn't work, but the error now shows up for some reason. And now I know how to get into safe mode in Windows 8.1.

INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE is the error message. I'll do some investigating now that I have somewhere to start.

Definitely check to see if Rapidstart is enabled. if its off then make sure your sata mode setting didnt change on you. if you find its set on IDE or compatibility then change it to AHCI.

I will never understand computers. Rapid Start was never enabled, and I had switched the computer to AHCI mode after reading some other explanations.

However, I tried it again this morning, and after the same error message, it restarted and went straight to Windows like nothing was ever wrong. Now that my MoBo firmware is updated and should be able to support next-gen GPUs, I'm too scared to switch them out and risk that restart loop again.

I appreciate your help, and I hope the problem is solved, though I'm not quite sure how it happened. I tend to put my PC to sleep rather than shut it down, so hopefully I won't have to worry about it, but I know me, and I'm itching to get that new GPU in so I can crank up the settings on the games I'm playing these days. Thanks again.
