Just got called by a foreign call centre and they told me that 10 other people have been accessing my computer :??:  through the internet. Basically they told me they had disabled some kernels and installed a trojan file ( I think it was csrss.ex ). Now there telling me I have to pay £240 for some total internet security software. I don't know about you guys but I don't have that much money lying around. It was "your drive" I believe made the call to tell me this. They took remote access of my laptop to show me the warning that never showed up for me as well as the kernels and drivers that were disabled. I told them to call me back im a coule of hours and im just not really sure what I should do.

My laptop
E machines E732z running windows 7
I use AVG free and scan daily and it never picked up any of these

Wasn't really sure were to put this sorry if its in the wrong place

This is a scam......it is quite common. They prey on people that don't have an understanding of computers and basically try to extort money from you....

AVG is good protection - you might want to install MalwareBytes (it is free) and run a scan also. The combination of AVG & MalwareBytes will solve almost anything out there.

My first thought was its a scam but they had my name and the code for windows on my laptop which has made me unsure aswell as all the Microsoft kernels that weren't running, im not a computer genius but pretty sure kernels should be running most if not all of the time.

Scammers/Gray Hat Hackers bro

P.S
You can try to get their ip trough cmd, write ipconfig, then netstat -ano, it will show if a other pc is connected to your computer. :)

The companies that run this scam purchase a telemarketing list (most likely illegally) where they have your name and phone number.....the rest of the call is a script they read from and try to scam you. If have seen this done regarding computers, phones and tablets.

DO NOT PAY THEM - DO NOT ALLOW THEM ACCESS AGAIN.....

1. Fart into the phone
2. Say "No thanks", and hang up

#1 is optional.

I seriously want one of these clowns to call me. I want to hear his head explode as I ask him "Which PC?"...and then I walk him through the Linux VM, trying to find the "Start button".

These guys are slick in their operations. They obtain lists of people and run their scam - my father was targeted at one time, and they started harassing him - even going to the point of threatening to kill him if he didn't pay up....the FBI was involved.

And other operations simply scroll through every number in an area code and exchange.

212-xxx-0001
212-xxx-0002
212-xxx-0003
etc.

Wait until someone answers.

My person opinion - these guys obtain lists (name/phone) of people that are targeted because of the area they live in, their age, etc....their script is written by smart people, with specific "key words" to put you back on your heels. Once you get on their "list" - if they believe you are a viable target, your name/phone number are often shared amongst the scammers - so you are targeted via different scams.....

Right.
But having been tangentally involved with 'target call lists' in a past life, the more targeted, the more expensive the list is.
But yes...once they get an answer, AND that call lasts more than 45 secs, you go on a special list. To be sold to whomever.

I've had 2 of these. I have XP, Vista, & Win 7 honeypot VM's at the ready (readying Win 8). I've managed to waste as much as 2 hours of the clown's time before the demand for money. Neither one could hang up fast enough when informed that everything they'd done was recorded for further forensic analysis (both calls hailed from within India).

A few years ago, when the car warranty scams were going around, I made a game of it. "How long can I keep this fool on the line"
My name? John Rhumbo (play on John Rambo)

My record was only 45 mins.

Tell them to hold on one second, lay the phone down and walk away. When you hear that annoying tone from the phone company - hang up the phone. They will stop calling.
