Xbox One or Upgrading PC?

Hello, today I have a question I've been asking myself for a while; should I upgrade my PC or should I get an xbox one?

There are 3 parts I was going to get for upgrading my PC: i7 4790k, Corsair h80i, and an MSI Z97 G45 Gaming Motherboard.

I realized that with PC in probably 4 years or so I would have to upgrade again because of upcoming games in the future. With the xbox one it'll last me it's whole lifetime (until newer consoles) because console games will always be made to work with the hardware, I play console and PC but the majority of games I play on PC are either old or just non-intensive (counterstrike, Skyrim, Payday 2, minecraft etc.) I have a mid-range gaming computer already (AMD FX 6300, 16 GB RAM, GTX 750). To summarize it, I just want something that'll last me a really long time, I already have an xbox 360 and I am paying for gold on it. The recent issues regarding hardware on xbox one (like the hard drive) isn't a problem for me as I can just purchase a 1TB external hard drive. I don't really care about graphics as long as it continues to give me a fun experience and good FPS.

You don't need the CPU cooler or gaming motherboard. Just get a motherboard that is the same socket as the CPU you have. The only advantage to a gaming mobo is extreme overclocking and multiple PCIe slots. You don't need either. The cpu cooler is in the same boat, not needed unless you are going to do some serious overclock.

As I read your post, it's pretty clear you're leaning in the direction of the XBox One. Plunk down the $400 to $500 and you've got a sweet gaming system for the next 4 or 5 years approx.

May I suggest you a more humble configuration? The point is: you want a whole system to last long and rely on good fps but nothing extreme.
Drop to a i3 or i5 broadwell as they come out. The i3 haswell are right now much more powerful than every AMD processor available, for gaming (edit). The graphics for the consoles range from a R7 260X (X1) and a R7 265 (PS4) but the PC versions are stronger. Maxwell on the otherside is more efficient and a 750Ti will beat the PS4. Since you can update the GPU it all depends on how much you want spend to maximize the platform. For example I'm aiming to a i5 broadwell T for my console/pc. A console cost less because software cost more and they have royalties on it. So it really depends on how many games are you aiming at. I bought a used 360 to play only FM4 and Tekken 6. I wouldn't buy it because there's only FM5 for me.
If you only aim at entertainment for the longest time possible I cannot suggest you something better than an i5, even locked, just wait broadwell. If you choose to go on the X1 then make sure there are games worth, and be aware that crossplatform won't be better on that console.

I am probably going to get roasted for this but there is something to be said for the game quantity (not quality) for the consoles. Games are usually designed for consoles first then ported to the PC if there is enough demand.

My only problem with consoles is that they are not upgradeable. I like the new PS/4 with the fact you can replace the HDD with an SSD if you want. They even provide OS installs so you can do this. My big problem is the graphics cards. These console guys need to put in a PCIe slot so I can put a Titan in if I want.

The other problem is that I am a big time case moder. It is hard to mod a console (it has been done though) and I love making my PC my own.

Just some food for thought. You have to decide were your priorities are. I would probably look at my console ad see how it is treated. If it is hidden away or has a slice of pizza on it then I would probably stick with console but is it is pristine with a custom paint job or pin striping then I think you are going to like the PC world.

I don't get how you can really make this statement seeing as the PC's catalog of games is 100x bigger than any console. Consoles don't have backwards compatibility, PCs can play any PC game released, ever. The statement that games are made for console first is crap too. More games are released exclusively for the PC each year than consoles. Yeah there are a few ports but that's it.

PC has been around a long time. You have too look at year to year. Who got more new games last year, PC or Console?

PC definitely had more games last year. Even if you took all 3 consoles and put the games that came out together, PC would still have more. Just the game on steam greenlight are equal to the number of games released on console.

Let's just say that the PC did have a down year and somehow consoles had more released games that year. You have to buy all 3 consoles just to play all of them. In addition to that, your game library is restricted to what's made for said console. Right now the next gen consoles have very few games for them. PC will always have a growing library.

Yes last year does seem to be a turning point for games and from the look of things next year is going to be the same. Question is will it keep up?

I think the trend is just starting. With complaints that next gen consoles are underpowered and over-complicated, I see many people choose to upgrade their pc rather than buy another console.

I think the only year that PC was outpaced by console games (not including indie games) was 2006. That's when the xbox 360 turned into the defacto game platform of choice for that generation.
